Hello from a newbie

Was always thin until a car accident paralyzed me for a short period of time from the neck down. I've had nerve problems since then, and some mobility issues. But my feet and ankles and knees were getting worse simply due to a lack of use (sedentary job) so I knew I had to ignore the pain and hope it reversed some things... Weight went way up due to the inactivity, so I'm chopping away at that.

I've had a treadmill for nearly 4 years now, but never used due to the pain. Tried a few times, just hurt. Some days I ended up walking with a cane, or couldn't walk at all from even random tendinitis flareups.

Got weighted the second week in January at the clinic for a respiratory infection, and was shocked. That day I started on the treadmill. First day I could barely do 1/2 mile without a lot of pain and gasping. 10 days later I was doing a mile at a time. Since 10 Jan I only missed two days, both due to severe tendinitis that prevented me from walking. Some days I get 9 miles in now, but every day sees at least 3 miles...

I'm making progress. Dropped about 33 lbs in the last 7 weeks...

New treadmill gets delivered in two more days. My Horizon Elite T7 was OK and works fine but I didn't like the controls or the options, so my new Horizon 7.8 AT will be more what I'm looking for now...

I look at it like quitting smoking back in 2004. It's a matter of learning new habits and losing old habits. I had a couple Taco bell tacos for lunch, two days I think, since that second week in January. No other fast food from drive thrus that I basically lived on every day for lunch during work. I now just get something little to nibble on, carrots or a handful of peanuts, and that's my lunch. Dinner I still do simple things that my son and I always have done - Cheeseburgers, lots more chicken now though, fajitas, etc....

I've dropped a lot of weight already, and need to find some older pants to wear again as mine are too big and the belt is getting cumbersome to cinch that far, so I may need a new belt now as well...

But I am working through the foot and ankle pain, I am noting that my joints aren't quite as sore to walk on as they start to get used again...

Also starting to take vitamins and supplements again. Any suggestions in that regard?

Oddly enough, the only person in my life who has even noted the 30 lbs lost was my mother... So I'll be curious how far I can get before summer. It would be nice to wear clothes that I like again, rather than loose baggy things all the time to try to cover up...

Funny how I had made new years resolutions in the past to do what I'm doing now but never even started to follow through on them, but that one shocking number on the scale at the clinic was all it took to jumpstart me...

Thanks for any recommendations for anything... I lived my entire life until I was 40 or so with a 30 inch waist, 175 lbs, and able to eat things like a bag of Doritos for supper and a large bag of chips and dip for dessert, and never had to worry about weight... So this is a whole new set of habits I'm working on, and I'm clueless when it comes to a healthy lifestyle...

Hi. This is job for specialist/therapist. Light strenght training may help you much. Dont expect too much from supplementation unless you are in deficit of something.

I am excited for you! I praise God for your recovery from the paralysis. It sounds like you are making healthy strides, and taking the steps needed. I agree with fitom, light weights may help when you feel up to it.

Thanks! I've been doing that, and have a yoga exercise circle and even a long weighted bar to use while walking, so baby steps... When I'm not on the treadmill I also have a ton of different resistance bands, and a pretty comprehensive weight lifting system in the basement that I'll eventually work into as well. Right now I'm more focused on the weight reduction first and the eating changes, since that will bring me the most visible changes in everything to help encourage me to more... I want to get psyched while I can since this is going to be the time when it's easiest to see improvement. The more I go, the slower the changes will take when I have less weight to lose, so trying to get excited while I can. :)
