SWIMMING question???

Okay so after my girl and I work out at the gym we'll swim sometimes for an hour up to two hours.. I'll do freestyle, breaststroke, use the weights for my arms going back and forth doing laps...I'm not doing them all fast and vigorous, just a "light moderate effort" as MFP would say..

So my question is! I really don't think I'm burning 600/650 calories a hour like it says I am? Or am I? I'm clueless about how a body works in the water so any replys or opinions would help thanks! :)

  • I think you are, I swim once a week & swim a mile all freestyle & in around 45minutes. Swimming uses very muscle in your body & is the hardest way to cover ground, it's harder than running, walking or cycling etc because of all the muscles you are using.

The reason you probably don't feel like you have burned that many calories is because you don't realise you are sweating, if youre anything like me, you judge how hard you have worked out in the gym by your wet sweaty tee-shirt, you don't get that in the pool! But you are working hard
  • Yup exactly if I'm on the eleptical and sweating n hot I know I really did burn those 600 cals! lol.. Well thanks for the reply maybe I'll really start believing that I'm burning that many cals!

o and people that are "viewing" this "i see you" feel free to add me for support :p lol.

I think mfp over estimates swimming, I usually log it as leisurly
  • Yeah I picked the "swimming, leisurely, general" one and when I put 60 mins it says 552 cals lol.
  • I agree with lou5365; I swam in high school and college and no matter what workout you do in the pool, you're going to burn more than you think. Not only does swimming work all your muscles in your body, it also works your endurance since you're having to hold your breath. That's why it's also harder than any land sport where you don't have to worry about holding your breath. It makes your body work even harder.
  • Awesome! This makes me wanna swim everyday now:)

I love swimming but I too think that MFP is overestimating. A friend used her HRM in the pool and it showed less than MFP said. Its still great exercise though!
