I have been taking fish oil for a long time. I think it is aiding in my weight loss but even if it's not, it still has heart health benefits as well!

I can't tell you about fish oil since I haven't used it yet. I can tell you that I'm taking Flaxseed oil pills (1 with each meal = 3 daily) and I can definately tell a difference. The Omega-3's are one of the things that people don't get enough of in their diet and when you do then it can definately help.

I take fish oil every day -- have not been taking it long enough to comment on any weight-loss benefits, but it is great for your heart!

Yes but I don't see how anyone can afford to take 15 pills a day when a 60 count bottle is $25.00...LOL Thats alot of pills.

I take fish oil for my health, as right now I'm not eating as much oily fish as I'd normally have, but I have doubts that any claims to weight loss would be measurable or worth seeking.

In any case, it would have to work hard for weight loss, because it contains ten calories a capsule.

I have never seen a recommendation that anyone takes 15 capsules a day (=150 calories btw) and they are available FAR cheaper than $25 for 60!

Tesco, one of our largest supermarkets in the UK does six months supply of 1000mg capsules for £8.16, or 18 months supply for £16.32; I'm sure you must have similar suppliers.

$25 is for the higher quality purified capsules that have 1000mg of DHA and EPA in them. Most low cost fish oil only has between 300-600mg EPA and DHA which are the omega-3 vitamins that are the ingredients in the fish oil that boost your metabolism and counteract the omega-6 vitamins.

Very interesting! I've never heard of using Fish Oil for weight loss, but I began taking it on Monday for my health to supplement what I typically take in eating salmon once/week.

What's interesting is that I lost 4 lbs this week. Could be a total coincidence, but maybe that explains my mega-shed this week LOL (that's a lot for me!!)

    Hmmm!

    Anyone else?
  • My husband and I take large amounts of Fish oil for health and weight loss. But find the liquid MUCH easier. It would be WAY to many caps..ugh. My husband cannot take the larger sized gel caps ones ether.

Lemon and orange are common flavors, Lemons usually a bit cheaper. Just tastes lemony. Not fishy. Take with fool (not on empty stomach) if you have issues with fish burps.

My husband takes it straight, one tablespoon twice a day. I take one tablespoon and ether mix with some orange juice or my protein drink.

Two brands I like are Carlsons, and Vitacost.

    http://www.vitacost.com/Vitacost-Liquid-Finest-Fish-Oil-Omega-3-DHA-EPA

    http://www.vitacost.com/Carlson-The-Very-Finest-Fish-Oil

    1 tablespoon is 4800 Omega 3, thats 2400 EPA and 1500 DPA, 900 other omega 3 (140 calories)

Studies do show larger doses of Omega 3 can certainly help with weight loss, when part of an overall fitness and diet plan. Some studies have shown that participants did loss more weight then non fish oil users, when both were on the same diet and fitness plan.

But the key is a larger dose once or twice a day. Not two capsules a day. ;)

Also Flax oil does not seem to work as well, according to some studies - as the body's conversion rate of the Omegas EPA and DHA is not as effective a process from flax (compared to fish oil).

With flax you will miss out on DHA, completely, which studies seem to indicate has additional benefits that the ALA from flax may not provide.

ALA from flax can be converted to EPA, but the process does not always work well, and as you age the body has more difficulty with the conversion process, some people genetically also have difficulty properly converting flax seed oil to EPA, and many disease processes can effect the conversion -with fish oil no conversion is needed, EPA, DHA already there in a available form.

Fish oil seems to work best when taken twice a day, as opposed to once a day, for best benifits

I don't know if it has helped us in weight loss, as we use it as part of an overall fitness plan, and have been taking it for a few years. But it certainly has improved joint health in my husband, and my skin and hair.

My husband did loss some weight when he started taking fish oil, with no other changes. But it was not hugh amount, and he was not exercising or eating right. So may be coincidental. But he feels better when taking it and has less tiredness and joint pain. It also seems to help his stress management and mood.

We do take a few other supplements also. (MSM for skin hair growth and joints, CLA, ALA, COQ-10 and good multis)

I'm going to look into the liquid that would be so much easier! Thank you so much that was very interesting....I've been taking the capsules for a couple days and there are so many I worry about overdose but yet when I google it I guess its very rare. :)

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a terrible idea? I would talk to a doctor or nutritionist before you decide to take so much fish oil. There is evidence that adding seafood or fish oil to your diet can increase weight loss, but not by THAT much. Plus, most fish oil supplements have been found to contain high levels of Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). In my opinion, the small amount of *possible* added weight loss isn't really worth the time, money, or possible adverse health effects.

Purified fish oil doesnt contain PCB's, Mercury or Dioxins

Regardless of type, I would still talk to a doctor or nutritionist first about taking so much. And the extra weight loss benefits are still minimal. There just isn't a magical pill or food. If there were, we all wouldn't be here.
