I just went to Hawaii for 9 days. While we were there I walked and swam, but no running. I have been running 3 - 4.5 miles 5 days a week since November. I did no running while I was gone on vacation. I did my first run today and it kicked my butt . . . I feel like I lost endurance by not keeping up with it. This is all new to me and I wondered if you have had a similar experience. I am assuming that it will not take me any time at all to work back up to where I was prior to vacation. I was just really surprised !

    Yes!!!!

Takes just a very short amount of time to lose your endurance. :grumble:

I bet Hawaii was worth it though!

hey, does anyone else have problems with slightly swelling ankles after running/walking?I 'm not sure if I'm taking in too much salt or if this is just normal. I've only been walk/running for about 8-9 weeks and this is the first time I've experienced this. I did up my time this weekend to 60-80 min. I'm taking today off but still feeling a bit swollen. this getting older is harder than it looks. thanks

Occassionally my left ankle swells when i go on a longer run (5+ miles). It doesn't happen everytime so I think that it happens when I haven't ran a long distance in 3 or more weeks. I already ice my shins after every run and stretch because I get terrible shin splints if I don't. I just hope that the left ankle swelling doesn't become a regular thing.

I did a bit of ice last night, I'll do some more today, I'll also do a bit more stretching, thanks for your thoughts, all suggestions are welcome. I can't imagine running as far as you do, but would like to try to get close to that someday.

If you up'd your mileage significantly, it may be your body reacting to the stress. General rule of thumb is to increase your weekly mileage by no more than 10% / week to allow your body to adjust.

    Ok to answer both questions....

As little as one week can affect your running. Important thing is to do some light runs this first week back and build up to your usual running over a week or two. Although I am not a marathoner or anything close I have done a lot of research going into running to avoid injury and this article was just in runner's world magazine. Won't take long, but better to ease into it for 7-10 days than to end up injured.

Second question: An activity like running or walking for long periods of time or high endurance will usually cause some slight swelling. Hydrating before can help prevent but similar to standing on your feet for too long your circulation will go with gravity. Best advice is to ice up for 10-20 minutes after your run while you start to rehydrate your body. If your swelling is painful you may want to talk to your doctor or a foot specialist to make sure there are no underlying problems, but an increase in activity will produce swelling.

And Runnerdad has the math down perfect, no more than 10% increase from one week to the next! :drinker:

Hi there. I find that if I take more than one week off of running, I lose some of what I had built up. If it was in the beginning than I would have lost most of what I had built up and pretty much start over again except with a pretty good foundation that hopefully my body would remember!!!!

Good luck and it is definitely the time off that is kicking your butt. I would recommend never taking off more than a week at the very most, if you want to keep your stamina, endurance, and strength up.

Thanks for your input on this. I have increased my distance slowly, I was thinking I could just pick up where I left off before the trip. I will just have to ease back into things !!
