I have a swollen foot which has healed enough to walk normally in barefeet (swollen tendons and little toe)..... I haven't been able to exercise since Thursday and I need to do something!! Hurts to put foot in a shoe tho.
Do you think that going for a walk on the treadmill in barefeet would be ok?? or should I wait??
Thanks to those who reply

I have walked on my tredmill barefoot before. However, I did recieve a blister, so don't over do it.0

I don't have a treadmill, but I always use my elliptical with squishy Nike flip flops, and I've never had any issues.0

I want to say be careful. I'd let your foot heal a bit more before putting it through more stress.
Perhaps bike or swim. I'd be afraid of re-injuring my foot.0 -
The real question is what happened to your foot in the first place? (Why is it swollen?)
I am a Physical Therapy student (graduate in a year) and I feel your pain because I've had a recurring knee injury/pain that is keeping me off of the stationary bike. However, there are PLENTY of other types of exercise to do if your foot is not ready to handle extensive walking yet. You certainly do not want to experience a setback with the foot issue. Try a BOSU (or equivalent) type ball. http://www.exerciseballworkouts.net/ Got mine for $10 - $20 at the local sports store. There are TONS of free exercise programs for them online. I did a small clinical stint at a local PT clinic and followed along some patients during their workouts and worked up quite a sweat trying to keep up. Everything I did was completely safe for a foot/ankle.
That said, you basically never want to TOTALLY rest the foot either (outside of the first few days of injury). Occasional/purposeful movement through the normal range of motion (tolerable against pain) is essential to heal tendons, ligaments and cartilage.
As far as walking (or anything) in bare feet, we weren't born with shoes on and our feet are designed to handle walking barefoot in any condition. Society has deconditioned our feet through the stipulation that we live our lives in shoes. Just be careful when starting out and realize that shoes are actually a type of cast or orthotic device that braces/restricts our feet. When free of those restrictions, your feet will need time to adjust to their new "freedom."
Then just remember to ice your foot (swollen area) for at least 20 minutes afterward.
Good luck!0 -
Fantastic I was just abit worried about the impact thing..... but definitely not running....
I am very excited about being able to move!!
YAY..... now just have to wait on the kids to go to bed so I can get there0 -

Thank you for that it was very helpful..... to be honest I am not sure what happened to my foot.
I think it is the new training shoes that I got fitted for at the foot clinic..... The toe thing was purely a blister from the fancy expensive socks they sold be too.... I think the tendon itself is fine to walk on its the toe that is the biggest issue in the shoe at this stage...
I will start off slowly and see how I go, I don't want to delay the recovery either.0 -

Unfortunately being the weekend and hubby away at work I can't go biking or swimming.........
Will be just starting out slow and see how it goes... I think it might even be good for the tendons... I have been stretching them etc so abit of movement might be whats needed.0 -
I did 40mins @ 3.5mph (inclined to 15).... possibly could of worn padded socks..... yep I nearly got blister on ball of foot! (lol)
Feel fantastic just being able to get abit of a sweat up......0 -
