Weight loss is caused by being in a calorie deficit. If you thinking counting carbs instead of calories will help you reach your needed calorie deficit then good luck.0

I have an underactive thyroid, too. (It's properly treated with synthetic thyroid hormones.)
This is a good thread to read:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10767046/hypothyroidism-and-weight-management/
It was written by a scientist who works in thyroid-related research, who himself has hypothyroidism (has no thyroid gland at all, I believe), and who lost weight using MFP.
Hypothyroidism is often blamed for lack of weight loss. It can make loss more difficult, because fatigue is a common symptom (so hypothyroid people may be less active); water weight fluctuations are more random/extreme (so may hide fat loss progress on the bathroom scale); appetite can be a larger issue; and one's calorie needs may be less (though only slightly so, in practice). Still, calorie balance is what determines weight outcomes.
Some people find that low-carb eating helps, probably primarily from the standpoint of appetite control, and limiting some of the water weight fluctuation. So, it may be worth trying.
For me, just managing calories let me lose from obese to normal weight 4+ years ago, and stay at a healthy weight since. I ate what I'd consider a normal amount of carbs while lose, around 150g or so most days, and around 200g or so daily now in maintenance.
Best wishes!4 -

Hi. I’m just seeing this thread now.
How have you been getting on @kathsk53?
I have the same problem, under active thyroid, being treated with Levothyroxine. I have gained weight these last couple of years, despite being in a calorie deficit. My specialist recommended I eat low carb/high fat. So, I’m switching my macros round accordingly and giving that a go. In the space of a week, I’m down a couple of pounds. I’m trying to lose 14lbs. Interestingly though, my energy is better (although first few days were tricky TBH!).0
