I feel like ......if I stay within my calories and get exercise, I should lose weight. This morning - up a pound. What the heck. Granted I’ve only been back at this for a few days, but still. Just needed to rant.

Day-to-day the scale will fluctuate based on a variety of factors (hydration, food waste, sodium intake, etc.). When weighing daily track the moving average and evaluate trends rather than focus on the daily number. Libra and HappyScale are two popular apps or you could also use excel.6

Sadly, reality differs from feelings.
The graph below is what very fast** weight loss looks like, in practice.
This is a graph from Libra****, a weight-trending app.
The connected down-hill-ish line is the trend; the little upright bars connect each daily weight to the trend. You can see that the daily weights bounce all over, including some changes in the 2-pound range within a very short span of just a couple or three days: That's the fluctuation. Even the statistically-smoothed trend doesn't just keep dropping smoothly! For sure, daily scale weight just isn't going to drop steadily down (and waiting for weekly weigh-ins has the potential to make it look even worse, because of the potential for sampling a low day one week, and a high one the next).
I'd observe that this is an actual chart from a post-menopausal woman, specifically me. Women who have menstrual cycles can expect even wider, wilder fluctuations.
** That chart includes a period where I accidentally lost weight too fast for my then-current weight. Please don't do that: It's a Really Bad Plan, trust me on this.
Best wishes!
**** Libra is a weight-trending app for Android. Happy Scale is a common one for iOS/Apple. There are also others like Trendweight and Weightgrapher.5 -
I’ve been really on point with my logging/eating/calories as of late. 2 days ago I weighed in with a 1 lb loss. This morning I weighed in 0.8 lb higher. The human body is an organism not a machine. It just does weird crap and there’s nothing you can do but stay the course.
So moral of the story: I still dropped weight over 2 days.4 -
Thanks! I am a post menopausal woman as well, AnnPT77, so loss is not easy. Combine that with stress COVID eating.....yeah. I'll keep soldiering on.3

They go up and down constantly, but the overall trend is that it is going down. I would really recommend a weight trending app!3 -

I was so happy yesterday - weighed in and I was down 1.5 pounds. Today - up a pound. The human body is a strange thing. I can only hope that over time the trend will be downward. And yes, I eat a bit of chocolate every day, but I count it in.2
