When you weigh food, should it be cooked or raw?

    I believe you weigh the raw ingredients.

    The nutritional info will state "prepared" if the calories on the packaging are after it's been cooked, but generally most things listed are the raw weight

    You usually weight the raw ingredients. Think about a slice of toast for example. The slice of bread has around 90 calories in it. Toasting it doesn't change that, but what it does do it remove water from the slice of bread making it weigh less. So if you weighed the toast but used the bread figures, you'd be eating more calories than you think you are.

    Most meats behave in the same way. When you cook them they become denser as water evaporates making the calories per gram higher in cooked meat than raw. I hope this makes sense!
