Are there any equestrians here on MFP working to improve their nutrition and fitness for better effectiveness, balance and injury prevention? I am opening this challenge for anyone interested in joining me in a Spring-Summer 2020 challenge!
My personal challenge: Phase I May 12th-July 1st
Cardio or Yoga: 2 sessions
Resistance Training: 3x per week
Share your personal goals, motivation, decide on a group challenge (I'd be interested in others' ideas), and/or log-in exercise hours to achieve summer goals!
It doesn't matter which discipline, whether you show or ride for pleasure! Equestrians have a unique need for core stability, overall body strength/flexibility, and balance.
I'll post my progress here, join in anytime.

Oh Yay! another horse person on here! I'm an eventer. I'm so glad shows are finally being rescheduled and starting to open back up. Normally I ride 5 days a week during show season, but my mare has a heel bruise currently and I've been sick for a week. Blech! Hoping to try for some quiet walks this weekend to get us both back into it. At least we were both down and out at the same time.2
-
Hey there! So happy to see another horse person too! Eventing is a tough discipline. Sorry to hear that you've been sick and for your girl's heel bruise. I was in a slump before too.... mid-March when COVID really hit, my gelding developed a bad abscess... ***6 weeks*** but now we are back at it. I'm working on whipping my behind back into shape. 5 days is awesome, what kind of regiment do you follow?0

Hey there! I am an equestrian looking to get in better shape.
I do endurance on my Morgan. Would love to be a part of your group!
My main goals right now are to lose weight because I'd like to be lighter on my horse. Life is weird right now in the covid-age. Endurance events in my area have mostly been canceled this summer, and I stress ate a whole bunch over the last few months, causing me to be way heavier than I'd like to be for a ride.
Right now I am not able to ride much, unfortunately. I'd like to be riding 3x a week, but my husband has been out of town for work and I'm at home with our two young children, trying to telecommute. I am lucky enough to have my horses at home, so it's easy to head out on a ride, but that also comes with a lot of work. I do get to see my horses everyday though.
My little herd is a 14 year old Morgan gelding, a retired 30 year old Morgan/Quarter gelding, a BLM burro, and a Welsh pony (Section C) who belongs to my children. I also do retirement boarding for another old quarter horse.
I think I'll think about it and set some realistic riding and fitness goals, and I'll be back!

Morning Horse buddies! I'm slowly recovering. Pretty sure it was Covid. Lingering cough is still there and the fatigue is brutal, but I was able to do a 30 min W/T hack around the pasture. Frosty's heel bruise seems healed. I have a hunter pace June 13 that we shooting for. Should be fun and more importantly low key.
I did competitive trail years ago as a kid with an amazing morab. I'd like to do one with my TB at some point. I'm big on cross training them.1 -
Hi Shorepine!! Welcome! It's great to connect with horse girls and it never fails our goals (and challenges) seem so similar. Slow and steady wins the race and I really believe adaptation is key during this COVID period. Your herd sounds amazing, post pics? A realistic goal.... realized... is greater than months of overshooting and it all falling by the wayside.. Especially now when all structure seems unwound and it is so demotivating and uncomfortable. Setting a goal and knocking it out will build you up. Have you used the SMART goals approach before?
MomLarisa, omg I didn't realize you were managing that kind of illness, so awesome that you still got yourself up for a 30m hack!! You're my ideal with a 5 ride usual routine. What is the course like for your June 13th event? Do you weight train? From your profile its seems a def yes...
Happy to meet you ladies... I'm June:)1 -

Good morning, I am envious of the arena riding right now, I would love to play around in an arena. Even though I'm not much of an arena rider, I do like it every now and again. Having my horses at home means I don't have an arena, although I can haul to several close by. But, both are closed right now due to covid. One is the fairgrounds so they have strict rules, and the other is a friend's barn but she runs a big boarding facility and is only allowing boarders in right now. Makes sense.
I do a lot of horse camping in the summer, and I've got lots of reservations lined up. I'm hoping they don't get canceled too! My kids are 5 and 7 and just getting started riding. This summer was the big plan to get them up and riding, so I bought the pony in February. He is an older pony and an absolute saint.
Thanks for the reminder about SMART goals.
Goal for today: is to log all my food and have a deficit.
My goals for the week are:
Lose a pound
Yoga 5x (2/5 done)
Cardio 5x (1/5 done)
Pony time with the kids 3x (1/3 done)
Ride my horse at least once
Cardio for me is a run or a hike. I find the yoga is pretty sufficient for strength training for me. I only have the weekends to ride right now because my husband is out of town for work and it's just me home on our farm with 5 horses and the kids, plus trying to work from home, plus the mandated distance learning thing.
The kids and the pony is actually a lot of work.
I will post pictures of my herd soon! Have a great day horse friends.

Gorgeous!! Love it!!0

Shorepine, you have so much on your plate!! I'm struggling and I don't have children:) It'll inspire me not to be lazy or unmotivated just seeing all you're doing *before* even your workout/ride time! I like yoga for strength building too... it's really great for what we do. Today, I'll flat Lhasa and walk him around the new place (he's settling in and very amped up by his new digs), I'm putting back shoes on him tomorrow and will get back to some low level jumps later this week! He's a chunker so I'll be working on our conditioning.1

I'm starting to finally feel better. I ponied my daughter on the POA yesterday and got 15 min of real dressage in at the end after she was done. Raining this morning so not sure I'll get a hack in or not this afternoon.2

Hi Ladies, I'm not always cheery and positive (it's a practice lol) but sending positive energy your way... thought for the day...
We are blessed/cursed with this love of horses and the sport of riding, and in many ways, (for me) it gives me a north star to drive my efforts and goals forward. Allowing this to be a big motivator behind this fitness challenge!1 -
Got closer to a real ride in yesterday. Longer warm up and cool down for me to take it easy. Did some light grid work and that got me winded and coughing again. I guess my body will force the slow recovery. Frosty was feeling Ms. confident. I love that mare, hot thing that she is. I need to start challenging her and keep her thinking so we both don't get complacent.0
-
@Lhasandme How do you like your new barn? Why did you move?0
-
Hi there M! From what I've heard about COVID it really does take a long time for recovery, I actually think you're doing alot! I'm loving the new barn, thanks! I moved to Darmouth, MA and one of my best gf's has a place 15 miles from home so it was kind of a dream to move with her. I loved my old barn too (so bittersweet to transition out) but it was an hour one way (just a bit too much to tack on 2 hrs for every ride).0

@shorepine how did your weekend go? I know you have a ton on your mind? Any pony time?0
-
Hey horse friends. My weekend and week was good! I'm here with a report from my last week's goals! I'm considering weeks to be from Mon-Sun.
My goals for the week were:
Lose a pound (I was down 3/4 of a lb overall), so not quite. But I did log my food everyday.
Yoga 5x (5/5 done- achieved!)
Cardio 5x (5/5 done - achieved! I ran 4x and went for a pretty good heart pounding hike the 5th day)
Pony time with the kids 3x (3/3 done! The kids did great. Achieved!
Ride my horse at least once (I rode him twice- achieved!)
My kids did really good last week with the pony. They are just learning how to ride, we've only had him since February. My daughter has been hesitant to go off the lead (she just turned 5) even though the old pony is super safe and a total saint- he's amazing. But last week on one of our rides she was like "I want to go by myself Mom!" and she did. We don't have an arena at my house so we just do mellow trail riding. I have a dry lot I use for putting them on the lunge line, though.
I also rode my horse twice. We actually just focused on walking calmly. I'm trying to get him to relax a bit on trails since soon I will be riding with my kids and I don't want him charging around and getting too far ahead of the pony. It's hard because over the past few years we have been enjoying endurance riding and he loves to go by nature.
It was a good week overall. My goals are the same for next week, only I REALLY will lose a pound. Losing weight is the best way I can support my riding right now.1 -
@Lhasandme the derby field sounds like so much fun! I am also jealous of all your arena work and 4x a week riding! Once the fairgrounds opens up in my county I am definitely hauling in for a ride.
@MomLarisa I am so glad you feel better! I see that you have kids riding too? I love POAs a good friend of mine raised both her girls on POAs. They are such a great size, too, her girls now are 15 and 13 and still able to ride them. I am thinking our next pony after my kids transition off the little Welsh will be a POA.
1 -
Hey ladies! I tried to do some jump schooling yesterday but got pretty winded. Cut the jumping short and ponied the POA with my daughter instead. @shorepine you are right! POA's are a great size. she's sturdy enough to handle me for short refresher sessions, so the kids won't really outgrow her unless they really get into riding more. I haven't tracked food since I made it to maintenance and I've put 3 pounds back on so I'm back to tracking everything today. It's too easy to snack, even on somewhat healthy things like popcorn. I'm supposed to go school cross country with a friend Thursday if it doesn't rain. Keeping my fingers crossed.1
-
@shorepine, you killed it last week!!! OMG, that's amazing! I'm still striving to complete 3 boot camp wo's this week (no excuse, I just haven't committed to making it happen and have been dwelling/lumbering in wishing it happens lol somehow)... I really want the benefits of more strength. So excited for your daughter's independence!! I can't imagine how it feels to bring your children along with riding xo This pony sounds so perfect! With all you have going, you're doing everything to make your weight loss goal happen! Do you drink a lot of water?0
-
@MomLarisa, you definitely want to be careful with your oxygen levels... is it hot when you ride? My goal is to reach a maintenance level and be careful as you describe (not close to that at this time). I'll post a "before" pic in breeches to get real ughh!! Thursday sounds incredible... fingers crossed for you! Keep us posted.0
-
@MomLarisa I'm sorry you continue to feel winded. I hope it gets better, soon. I'm sure your daughter appreciated the riding time, though. How old is your daughter and how long has she been riding? The reasons you like your POA are exactly why I want a POA for our next kids' horse- I'd love something that adults can hop on too. Our little Welsh is really a starter pony, my kids were pretty timid around big horses and I needed something so super safe. Mine are pretty little, my daughter just turned 5 and my son is 7. My son is getting more confident with such a nice pony and he will ride by himself now. It's great I can just throw them on and they can just ride, he is so cooperative and listens to anyone however small or inexperienced. If he feels them get shaky up there, he just stops. We don't have the best time ponying though, when he's being ponied he tends to slow waaaay down and my arm gets pulled out of the socket practically just dragging him along. Haha. Another reason for a POA I guess!
@Lhasandme I always try to do too much. I am really consistent with getting my exercise in, but I really need to focus more on my weight loss. I tend to overeat. I've got a lot of weight to lose, too, about 40 lbs to get to a healthy BMI. Last year when I was training for endurance I lost 20 lbs but when the fall hit and ride season was over, I gained it all back which I am totally not proud of at all. I really want to focus on getting to a healthy weight before the end of the year. Thanks for the reminder about the water- I could really be better at that.1 -
