I just finnished watching fathead' (which you can get on megavideo) and was quite shocked by some of the stuff. does this guy just hate the government or do you think it's genuine? personally i never thought carbs were good for you, but didn't know they were that bad?! I love potatoes!

I took the documentary with a grain of salt. The sarcasm melted in there was hilarious, don't get me wrong... and watching Supersize Me and Fathead back to back made the hilarity even more apparent. If anything, it made me not fear fast food AS MUCH. And it made me feel if absolutely necessary, I could eat it without guilt, so as long as I take the measures to "make it healthy." ie: no bun, no sauces, etc.
To be honest, both of the documentaries are from an extreme perspective, which isn't most of the population. Actually, I don't have proof of that, at least, it isn't most of my relationships...which is a shocker because I am a college student, and that's a group of people you would EXPECT to eat fast food often.

I loved that documentary and I think most people can definitely learn a thing or two from it. What stuck with me were the points about processed oils, and certain carbs (white bread, pasta, sugar etc) and our insulin reaction to them and how this affects fat storage and energy usage. I've changed my eating habits since then and have lost bloat and weight.0

Just curious, but what does the Paleo diet have to do with eating fast food all the time? Would Sisson advocate the consumption of fast food on a daily basis?
IMO, what this study showed was that regardless of your diet, health markers will almost always improve when your weight goes down through a calorie deficit combined with exercise.0 -
I saw this a few days ago. I loved it. I learned a LOT.
I eat this way now. I am never hungry. My body HATES carbs. I eat high protein and just upped my fat thanks to this movie. I feel even better!!

IMO, what this study showed was that regardless of your diet, health markers will almost always improve when your weight goes down through a calorie deficit combined with exercise.
If you think it was about eating fast food all the time then you didn't watch the same movie. It's WHAT he ate when he ate at fast food restaurants that matters.0 -

(Also, the part where they went into the public schools to look at lunches basically convinced me that I'm gonna have to homeschool my kids.... I can't believe schools serve kids such junk.) So I guess I felt that Fat Head was making a straw man argument by pitting itself agains Supersize Me. But maybe I need to see Supersize Me again.
In any case, Fat Head did lead me to do a lot more reading up on the lipid hypothesis and stop fearing saturated fat! Also, I have adopted a paleo/primal eating style because of it too (not that it is directly related, but that's what I was led to following the reading I have done subsequent to watching that movie).0 -

Well, he DID eat fast food all the time, and he ate plenty of refined, starchy carbs during the time too. He also tracked calories on a daily basis, did exercises and maintained a rather significant daily calorie deficit.
To put his deficit into perspective, I'm a fairly small person (151 lbs) and only exercise 3-4 times a week. Yet, my daily calorie intake exceeds what he documentary's host ate daily.
He went into the science of why carbs should be reduced or eliminated, but his diet did not support his hypothesis. Just because he didn't eat french fries means nothing. He still ate refined carbs. If he would have included french fries with each meal, he would not have lost weight and his health markers would not have improved because he would no longer have been eating at a deficit.
His point would have held a lot more water if he would have eaten at an excess calorie level and eliminated all starchy carbs.
But of course, that would not have worked because the Taubes hypothesis that insulin response is more important than calories consumed is totally wrong. Mark Sisson and most of the modern Atkins followers acknowledge that calories do matter.0 -

Yes! Eww. I remember that some of my friends in high school would eat a personal pan pizza, some Little Debbie snack cakes and a soda for lunch EVERY DAY. This was because there was not only the school sanctioned "hot lunch" but also a little Pizza Hut stand in our cafeteria! Of course, the hot lunches weren't a whole lot better. It is just ridiculous what passes for "healthy" in some places.0 -

What is the point of creating all these hypothetical scenarios that will never happen? Cut out half the patty and replace them with some french fries? OK, whatever...yeah, I acknowledge that would suck big time as a diet, and yes, your health markers may get worse. But what exactly is your point then?
You're getting away from my original point, which is that Fathead has very little to do with eating primal or paleo. A true paleo/primal demonstration would have been to consume grass fed beef with a crapload of veggies and a heck of a lot more calories, not fast food beef with the bun while carefully monitoring calories and eating at a huge caloric deficit.0 -

All bantering aside, I don't think it's paleo/primal either but it's a heck of a lot closer to it than the average stuff-your-face-with-starches diet is. Not to mention that as we have seen here, it can lead people closer to primal type eating once they start researching the issues.0

Yes! Eww. I remember that some of my friends in high school would eat a personal pan pizza, some Little Debbie snack cakes and a soda for lunch EVERY DAY. This was because there was not only the school sanctioned "hot lunch" but also a little Pizza Hut stand in our cafeteria! Of course, the hot lunches weren't a whole lot better. It is just ridiculous what passes for "healthy" in some places.
Well, I can't say that school lunches are ideal but when you see what the schools are up against, they are doing the best they can. We have to go with the lowest bidder for food because God forbid we spend one nickel more than the politicians and public think we should. Also, we have 530 kids registered in my elementary building this year (98% free lunches so the only lunch $ coming in is what the gov. will give) with one cook (making approx min. wage) to feed all the kids in about an hour so whatever is prepared has to be fast. I don't know how she manages to get it all done by herself. The kids are also offered fresh fruit every day and I have seen the trash cans filled with it because the kids throw it away.0 -

Interesting. Back when I was in high school (a LONG time ago!), I remember the food being pretty crappy. Pizza, ham and cheese between two hamburger patties, wierd concoctions that I can't even name, etc...all of it felt very processed and just not healthy in general. But in two and a half decades (I just dated myself), it's pretty remarkable how much fatter high school kids have gotten. Having any kind of belly back then was a bit embarrassing. Now it has become the norm.0 -
I say look into Paleo/Primal because both of those lifestyles are very high in saturated fat and personally I've had a lot of success living that way. Fathead taught me not to fear saturated fat, and how it effects my insulin response. Also it's hilarious.0
