Healthy Pub Food?

Is there such a thing? When i go to hang out with friends, i never know what to order. I've already switched from beer to Gin and Soda (only about 60 calories) but what about the food part? Is there anything on a pub manu that's remotely healthy?

grilled items. Ask that they do not use oil or butter. See if they can use EVOO.0

Not really much health in pub food. But if your very specific about your orders you can usually get away with something. Generally if they have something like grilled chicken or baked fish you can do that without much worry. Always, Always, Always go for the vegitables instead of a potato or rice dish though. Also, like previously mentioned, ask if they can do it without the sauces and butter. On the upside, its still usually better then fast food if you are careful.0

If you know that there aren't going to be great choices, eat before going out and then you won't be so tempted. The place I use to go to offered carrot and celery sticks on the menu so I would just eat those.0

Wish my pub had vegetables. All mine has is something on the menu called grilled veggies which is actually a big bowl of butter with some poor, dead carrots and beans floating face down in them. And I asked ones, the owner chuckled and walked away.0

I guess pubs figure if you don't care enough about your liver to refrain from poisoning it with alcohol, then you might as well clog a few arteries along the way. :ohwell:
Some of these posts are really upfront honest, and people are apologizing for what they say, in case it's taken wrong. So if you take that statement wrong, I'm sorry, I believe abstinance is best during weight loss, drinking in moderation when you reach goal. :drinker:
banks, your description is so typical of barroom food. We used to go to a little biker bar in Oregon and the owner was very receptive about trying new things so we had some nice lower calorie options because we asked for it.0 -
Hmmm - i'm all for saying what you feel, but if you don't want your statement to be taken the wrong way, you might want to avoid coming across as judgemental by using phrases like 'don't care enough about your liver'. Having a drink with friends and 'poisoning your liver' are two very different things, and it certainly doesn't mean that i don't care about clogging my arteries.0

Bahh, If my liver isn't dead yet, after MY college life (and, according to my doctors tests, it is apparently very strong if you can believe that, it's the scottish blood in me I guess), it can live through anything.:drinker:
Now, that being said. I'm not in the camp of requiring abstinance while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I agree that alcohol is not the best way to get your calories (alcohol basically = simple carbs which = fat). On the other hand many types of alcohol can be beneficial in small doses. Should you drink every week when dieting? Dunno, I doubt that would be good for you (it's definately bad for your liver if you have more then 2 or 3 drinks in a sitting every week.), but that doesn't mean you can't tie one on once every month or 6 weeks or so, just be prepared for a bad week weight loss wise.

You could ask your pub if they will substitute the chips on the side with a salad (if they serve salads anyway). I guess I am lucky because mine will do that for a little extra fee.
I, personally, have a glass of wine with dinner almost every night and I have lost an average of 1.5 lbs per week. It all depends on your choices, perferences, discipline, etc. Some people can't do with coffee and creamer. Some people need sweets. To each their own in moderation!:drinker:0
