ok, something i've wanted to do for a while is a triathlon. i think that it is an amazing sport, an incredible challange, and a great excuse to work out. i've been reading a lot about tri's, and i think it's something for me. i love to bike, and i used to swim the distance events when i swam in collage. I dislike running, but i could run this. It's a sprint triathlon, which is Swim ½ Mile, Bike 9.8 Miles, Run 3 Miles.

here is the website of the race. http://www.ligoldcoasttri.com Any other new yorkers want to do this with me??

congrats!!! can you post up any literature you used to train with? also, what kind of bike did you use? i just have my mountain bike. i'm only going to get a pair or hybrid tires for it, nothing else.

i'm trying to lose a few excess pounds, but i can't just work out for the sake of working out. from what i've read, as long as you start really hardcore training by 14 weeks before, you should be good to go for a sprint tri. so that means i only have to really start focusing on the triathlon by march. which is good, because i don't have pool access yet.

My training wasnt the best - for a triathlon. I did the nike+ 12 week 5k training program. I ran 3-5 days a week, did light circuit training 2 days a week. I didnt have a road bike or do any swimming. I got an old (early 80's) panasonic 10 speed shipped in from NY after finding out that a starter road bike for a tri runs about $750. I rode it twice before the race. I swam once in the race day pool the day before the event just to get a feel of what a 50M lane felt like.

I lost time on my tranisitions too. I was a bit disorientated after getting out of the pool and my 1st transition from pool to bike took over 3 minutes. Which is a lifetime in race terms.

Looking back, I wish I had done a lot more swimming. It was tough! Halfway through I switched to a breast stroke in the deep end and walked across the shallow ends of the pool. At the end of the 400M I could barely lift myslef out of the pool. And im in relatively good shape. I run a 9m/mi, lift wieghts, train jiu jitsu, boxing, etc.

The bike was a breeze. 20k (12 miles) no problem. I probably could shaved a few minutes off with a better bike and training.

All in all this was my first event and I just wanted to finish. Next year is a whole different story! Im aiming for top 3 in my age group.

    Official Results - 162/324 Individual Competitors. 38/46 in my age group (M/30-34). 12:06.9 400M Swim (169th), 44:09.1 20K Bike (154th), 30:36.5 5K Run (158th), 1:31:24.4 Overall time

Its a great feeling completing the event, best of luck training!!!

wow dude, not bad! you finished, and thats what counts.

my swim is going to be open water, but in hempstead harbor, not any crazy churning ocean. i'll probably rent a wet suit or something. i'm lucky, there is a triathlon store about three blocks away from where i live.

swimming with a wetsuit is a good idea. A lot of the triathletes I have spoken too said it make a big difference wearing one. Hempstead Harbor should be a good swim, no strong current or large waves.

My advice is to find a beginers program you can stick to, and stay motivated. You can find beginner programs here: http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=28
