Knee Pain

Have swelling on knees and it’s getting more difficult to exercise daily. Any exercise / diet recommendations? I’m seeing my orthopedic soon.

Ice, rest, NSAIDS if you tolerate them.

No way anyone could give you any more advice than that.

    Good luck at the ortho.

I fractured my knee 5 years ago so I feel your pain, I'm also seeing an orthopedic doctor to get an xray and MRI sometime this summer. Low inflammation foods help, more vegetables. It's lame but true. I feel a difference when I eat more greens and cut out processed stuff. I still run once or twice a week, but a lot of my other workouts have become yoga or pilates since they are lower impact. Strengthening the muscles around the glutes/hips/core goes a long way to preventing knee pain.

I like the advice above. Diagnosis is really important, since different knee conditions can have similar solutions, but different remedies . . . and different risk levels, when doing things that aggravate the discomfort is involved. Sometimes, overdoing is burning bridges; sometimes it's just pain.

When you see your ortho, I'd suggest asking for a referral to a good physical therapist. They can help you figure out specifically in your case what strength imbalances, joint inflexibility, postural problems, bad habits (in walking or stair-climbing, for example) are causing unnecessarily much stress on your knees, and can give you exercises to help with your particular issues.

The only other temporary practice that might help the discomfort level might be epsom salt soak. Also, if you have pain at night, a pillow between or under knees might be worth experimenting with, if you haven't.

I have an autoimmune that attacks my joint and my knees get it a lot. My advice is until you see the ortho rest your knees as much as possible. Don’t risk further damage. Take painkillers when needed and if you must exercise do upper body ONLY.

Rest. Ice compress. Don't exercise until you see a specialist. Perhaps do some weights, whilst seated, to work your arms instead if you feel you need to do 'something'.

If you're overweight or obese, concentrate on losing weight - eat the number of cals recommended by MFP when you enter your stats and select a sensible rate of loss. If you have less than 40lbs to lose, don't select 2lb a week.
More body weight puts more strain on your knees.

I can't over-emphasize the bolded enough. Knee pain is not something that should be "worked through."

I also second the recommendation for a referral to a PT.
