Do you subtract your fiber from your carbs?

I've heard over the years that when figuring in your daily intake of macronutrients, dietary fiber can be effectively subtracted from your carb totals. I know that soluble and insoluble fibers will work differently in this regard, and I've never heard anything on the subject that seemed really definitive. Can anyone shed any light for me?

You can track your fiber as well as general carbs if you customize your settings at

The answer is yes, you can subtract your fiber.

"you can back out fiber from carb intake - insoluble fiber is 0 calories, and soluble is 0 or 2 calories per gram depending on the source...def back it out..for your diet, rotate in lots of green veggies, and mix in some fruit and brans on occasion too ok.... " John Meadows, CSCS

I am diabetic and my doc told me I could do this if the fiber count was over 4 grams per serving. Since I have started trying to lose weight I have not subtracted the fiber.

I am already tracking my fiber. I just wanted to know if I could effectively (eg-in my own head since MFP won't do it) subtract it from my carb totals.

    Jnick: thanks!
