Trying Not To Be Too Hard On Myself...

Hi There!
Been on MFP for just a few days...
Weight was never an issue for me until the last 6 years or so. Depression led me to overeat. Really just didn't care anymore. Well now I care. Now I realize what I've done to myself and I can't believe it. I need to lose 50lbs. At times, it seems overwhelming. I've read pages of the success stories here on MFP and they are inspiring, I know it can be done if I just keep at it.
Joined a gym and started working out 3 weeks ago. Working with a trainer on strength training and some nutrition. Been to the gym every day and plan to continue. Logging my food and exercise on MFP (love this feature!).
I have a goal to have the weight off in 8 months, by next April. Hopefully that's realistic. So far, my clothes are a tad looser and the trainer says I've lost 4lbs of fat and gained 3lbs of muscle. Anxious to see some real tangible results.
Looking forward to talking with you all and learning lots in the process!

It can be really overwhelming when you first start that's how I feel. If you are an emotional eater (like me) it can be even harder. I've gotten myself to look at food as fuel for exercising vs. stuffing my face to feel better and it really has helped me. Take it one day at a time our bodies are capable of AMAZING things and there is no doubt that you can do it. Fifty pounds in eight months is not unrealistic but maybe difficult! It's good to start with a high goal, I have 40 pounds to lose myself and I'm giving myself six months. If you don't do it though don't be hard on yourself, remember EVERY POUND IS A SMALL VICTORY!0

At times it may seem overwhelming but it is certainly something you have the power to do as no one else will do it for you! It gets easier and part of daily life after some time passes.
Physical exercise and you ability to change you body is a true sign of individual power!
Best wishes!0 -
good for you! It's really inspiring when people put it all out there. You're definitely on your way to your goal, and the exercise is a natural mood lifter so it's win-win! Good luck and feel free to add me if you want to expand your support network!0

Welcome!
I think 8 months is a reasonable goal, but I would suggest not putting a time limit on yourself. That can lead to pressure and guilt feelings that sabotage your hard work.
Ask yourself if this is a lifestyle change so that you stay healthy. If it is, then there is no deadline, just permanent success.
I've lost 45 lbs over the past 2 1/2 years. The 60 lbs of extra weight I gained took 10 years to accumulate. So, at 2 1/2 years with only 15 lbs left, I'm way ahead!
Good luck.0 -
Good luck! Sounds you are off to a good start. The MFP tools are really helpful (I'm so addicted to them now), but the community of people here are also a great asset. Keep up the great work.0

Yes, Shreyaj, that's so true of me as well! I used to know food was fuel...then I don't know what happened! Ha! So important to think before we eat. Thank you for the kind words0 -
Thank you all so much. This is what I came here for - the hard truth. That's why I'm 'trying not to be too hard on myself'. If I don't reach my goal by April, I will at least be closer to it and I'm okay with that. Still gonna hold out hope that I'll reach it though! :laugh:0
