I understand your point, but don't come preaching to the EDUCATED people who know their bodies and have been successful doing so. I have been eating around 1200-1400 daily, and have successfully lost and kept off 35lbs. YES, when you get to your goal, you need to up your calories to maintain your weight. That is common sense. I eat when I am hungry, and my body NEVER goes hungry. If I was hungry and starving at the end of the day, I would understand your point.
Everybody's body is different. Alot of people need to keep that in mind before making ignorant posts.

I'm glad I brought the popcorn. I agree that it gets rather annoying seeing the same post over and over again regarding our caloric intake. However, I can't help but find it hilarious when I see incessant amounts of bickering regarding the subject. Regardless of what we recommend, people are going to eat as much or as little as they want. No amount of writing or pleading or yelling will change that. People learn from trial and error, sometimes over and over again.0

It was more the tone of the message, it is down right patronizing. People who eat below their calories are well aware of this (even MFP reminds you of it when you log!), they don't need to be ranted at time and time again. We all do things differently and I am sick to death of people being all high and mighty about what you 'should and shouldn't do' .
I came to this site for support, yet all I see is people bringing others down all the time, for their eating habits/spelling etc.
I have seen posts calling people lazy and ranting at them for not exercising enough. I have seen one person make fun of another's weight. I am SO fed up with it. Why can't we just accept we are different and that we do things differently and move on?

Without getting into a troll fight, the reason a person who is trying to lose weight should not go under a specific caloric intake is because at some point in starvation mode, your body will start cannabalizing your own muscle. The loss of metabolism AND of muscle, which in itselt burns calories even when not actively being used, will sabotage your attempts to keep the weight off. THe other problem is that when you eventually can't handle such a restrictive diet and eat regular again, the weight you gain back, even if it's only to your original pre-diet weight, will have none of the muscle lost. So you will actually have a higher BF percentage at the same weight.0

Yes, what you're explaining here *can* happen, but it is not always the case. There are no right answers, and everyone is very unique when it comes down to metabolizing their meals. Ideally, people under the care of a professional have had personal attention and thorough evaluations to determine their treatment plan.
Frankly, there are far too many variables in any one person's life to state an absolute truth about diet and how it effects their health and body weight. Once you take subjects out of a controlled study and return them to normal life, those variables are reintroduced, and the game changes again. This is why it is down right silly for someone to come into the forums and throw "absolute truths" in the faces of people who have put a lot of personal research into their food choices.
I think we should use the information there, try different things, analyze what applies to us as individuals, and work hard at developing a plan that is personalized. I know we would all like Dr. Smartass, MD-PhD to assure us that his plan is fool proof, but that just isn't the case.0 -

He says it is not a risk to lose weight quickly, it is harder on the body to keep the weight on. Contrary to popular belief metabolism is not static, and although it does slow your metabolism down to eat less calories, you can quickly reactivate it in just a few weeks! Also eating 1000 a day is fine, im not hungry and i eat lots, especially fruits and veggies, lean proteins etc. I dont pig out anymore and i snack three times a day. When i meet my goal weight i need to watch grams of fat, not calories as much. I tell ya, its alot easier to work out being 23 lbs lighter0

I lost weight eating between 900 and 1200 calories per day and kept it off until I got pregnant and had my son, soo about 4.5 years. Mind you I did not eat that much by choice I eat that because that's when I got full. I think it different if your eating 1200 and hungry. I did eat that lots of tasty foods just made better choices. When I lost the weight I was eating about 1600 calories, but my diet never really changed so again that could be a factor. I now eat like this again, but like I said I eat until I'm full so I don't know. But it does work and can keep working.0

WOW! What happened to the rules of this forum where insults and rudeness and negativity is to be limited? It seems to me that the OP was making a statement that was not directed at everyone....only those people who have NOT done any research prior to starting a weight loss program, at least that's what I got out of it.
I am SOOOO tired, too, of reading post after post from people eating 800 calories and wanted to know why they aren't losing 2-5 pounds per week, or asking how they can lose 50 pounds in two months, etc. AND, let me add, that it does not make sense to judge a person's knowledge or education about HOW to lose weight by that person's own personal weight. By now, most of us should realize that it isn't just information or knowledge that plays into obesity.

I always hear people say this but the thing is im perfectly satisfied eating 1000-1100 calories a day. Im not hungry, I snack all the time and I lose weight and keep it off. I think it has to do with your body. I eat alot just healthy low calorie foods. Its honestly hard for me to hit 1200 calories and I feel its crazy to add food just to hit a number if im not hungry.. right?0

Nancy's exactly right. It is alarming to see this great tool for healthy living twisted around into a subtly and sometimes overtly pro-eating disorder thing. Lots of people are here struggling to get a healthy weight. And to have folks advocating very low calorie intake is at best unhelpful and can make it harder for eating disorder prone people to resist the compulsions of the disorder. So no. "Support" that is really enabling unhealthy body images and behavior is not being supportive.
And if a person doesn't like being. preached to by strangers, why click on a thread that's title advertises the sermon.

I agree with that, but that is why I said specific caloirc intake, as per individual. While the general rules will usually work well for the drastically overweight, as one gets closer to a healthy weight, a more scientific approach would probably be needed, like seeing a nutritionist or some other professional.
There is a lot more to it than just weight, there is also bone structure and Lean Body Mass (Bone and muscle). I girl who is 5'1 and under 100 lbs could easily get away with the 1000 calorie routine. But if people are going to drastically reduce intake, be prepared for muscle loss. It's gonna happen for most. In the long run it would be better to lose no more than 2 lbs a week and lift weight, eat a balanced diet. ect.0
