Anyone know if someone were to have shin splints? Do your shins have to be swollen or can they be sore too to be considered shin splints?

I have them bad. My shins do not swell but they hurt tremendously. I have never seeked the advice of a doctor though, I just work through the pain and eventually it reduces for me.

If they are sore to the touch or hurt when you walk on them, then you probably have shin splints. I get them when I run on flat and hard surfaces too often or for too long because I have really flat feet. It may help if you buy shoes that have better supports, or plastic gel inserts (can be found at many drugstores, relatively inexpensive) for your shoes, ice regularly and try some cross-training for a while - for example, ride a bike or swim instead of run, or run on grass or on an elliptical - avoid treadmills and asphalt as much as possible.

    Hope that helps!

I used to get them frequently when I was doing boot camp. Icing them after a work out helped a bit. My symptoms were disproportionate soreness. When I walked after my workouts it was like I couldn't control my feet anymore, it would just flop down instead of stepping. I asked the trainers at the rec and they suggested new/q\ appropriate shoes and icing.

I use to get them too, but extended calf stretching before the workout really helps me. I push against a wall alternating feet in the back, heels down. I also step on something forcing my toes to be higher, lastly doing a runners stretch then up holding one leg with that toe up and alternating.

    Then ice when really bad.

    I don't get them anymore.

I've always had them...I played soccer in college and ran off an on after I graduated...I bought some new shoes the other day, some asics gel-fluent 4's...they are super light and it's the first time I've been able to run comfortably with minimal pain!
  • Thanks guys for the advice! I agree I need to stretch before I do my workout...I just dont want to the point of an injury and I can't exercise. That would be a nightmare lol
