Hello Fitness Pal Members,
I am embarrassed to admit I am very overweight. Where can I go to get weighed in, if I might weigh more than the traditional medical doctors' weight scales?
Take care,
Sandra

Have you asked this question to your doctor?
The scale I have goes up to 400 lbs, but I've seen scales on Amazon that go higher.0 -
On Amazon Canada I see:
several at 400 and 440lbs
EatSmart Products Extra Wide Digital Bath Scale with 550lb capacity $50.55
Ideaworks 550lb extra wide talking scale at $93.52
Ozeri ProMax 560lbs $44.42
Plus a couple of stainless steel postal platform type scales with ~660lbs capacity and the My Weight SCMXL700T 700lb Talking Bathroom Scale all in the sub $250 range.
And these are in Canadian $'s... so almost free in US $ or Euro!!!

Thanks. The prices are pretty good for the weight scale. I will check with my family doctor. I would like to know how much I weigh but I have heard from a health professional when weight scales come out weights go up. I don't know the psychology of this. Thanks again4

I've been using this site daily since May but never looked at the forums until today. I'm 6'3" and started at 430. My experience with regular scales is they don't work and/or are easily broken so after some research I bought this patient aid floor scale where the display is on a phone cord like thing and can take batteries or a/c power. It's not cheap but it's worked very well for me so far. I live in an apartment and space is at a premium. This thing can sit on just regular carpet and still works in the bedroom without risking getting it wet in the bathroom where there is much less room and it has a 550 lb limit, so plenty of head room I hopefully won't ever need.1 -

Look at the base of your unit. Is it a sealed base with no "feet" or sensors? Or does it have "feet"?
If it is a sealed box with an inner platform that moves inside the box, then the carpet option MIGHT be valid.
If your scale has feet that are operating on a carpet, you WILL get a weight value. However that weight value will be different than if you were to place the scale on a hard, unyielding, floor.
Based on past observation I would tend to weight a bit less on softer as compared to more un-yielding floors.1 -
Sandra, I'm sure you will be able to find a scale and honestly, I cant agree with the philosophy that weights go up if scales come out. How else are you supposed to check your progress? 😄5

I weigh myself daily and have that way both conquered any fear I have of the scale and been able to watch the daily fluctuations. The day before yesterday I weighed 250. My girlfriend and I went out for lunch and I ate someone else's food for lunch and dinner both. I got on the scale yesterday morning and weighed 253. Salt in the pizza. (sigh) This morning, after eating a day of my normal diet, 251.
I put mine on the hardwood floor of my bedroom because there's no floor space for it in the bathroom. I just weigh in the mornings after the first bathroom trip and before I get dressed, because it's right there next to the dresser and convenient. And now it's habit. I won't deny that the days it shows me a new low that I'm a little happier that morning, but even days where it has a wild swing up three pounds like that aren't going to break my heart or my diet any more. I know what's going on, and 45 pounds lost this year say that I'm moving in the right direction.5 -
I dont want to purchase anything. I just want to be weighed. There must be a place other than a doctor's office?1
-
whats wrong with getting weighed at the doctors office, depending on your doctor if their at kaiser or a local clinic they have large scales that accommodate people with wheelchairs to sit down and be weighed those seem large enough depending on how much you weigh, they office should be able to weigh you. And I'm sure the doctor who cares for you want's to know your weight to provide care, they would find or make a way possible to get your weight. Best of care.0

Me neither, what other type of business or service would routinely weigh people?
In my home country I have seen some pharmacies with a scale that you can pay to use, but it was definitely not in the majority of pharmacies and I'm not sure what their maximum weight would be.
Otherwise, I can't think if anything besides going to the airport and trying one of the machines where you can check the weight or your luggage, but that would be crazy.0 -
I don't know what the weight limit is but the blood pressure machines at some pharmacies (I know many Walmarts have/had them and some chain places) also take your weight while you are sitting on them.0

I dont understand what is meant by 'when weight scales come out, weights go up'
You weight is what it is regardless of whether you measure it -the scale doesnt change it, it just records it?

There are home scales that can weigh up to 500 lbs. I Know because I'm waiting for one to come in. I used to 400 lbs, but now I weigh 288.2 lbs.
I have vision problems and needed a scale that could talk, but the weight scale only comes in a 500 lb limit. So if you weigh 500 or less you could get one.
Also, some clinics have weight scales that can weigh around a 1,000 lbs. They are meant for bariatric patients. You may have to makes some calls to find out where one is depending on where you live. That's if you can't afford to buy the 500 lb scale or you weigh over that amount.
Wish you the best. If you need a friend on here you can send me a friend request. 😄3 -

I had to lose weight for a long time to finally be weighable on the doctor's scale. It was an NSV for me that not many would understand.2 -

I took it to mean that the health professional thought (for whatever reason -- I don't agree) that when people start weighing themselves, they start gaining weight over time -- perhaps some kind of yo-yo dieting theory, associating weighing with dieting? As I said, I don't agree. In my anecdotal observations, overweight people who don't do anything about it generally keep putting on pounds over the years, as well.2 -
Hi, I used to work at a passenger train station. I had the odd person weigh themselves. We had a large scale for cargo. I assume if you are nice, you could check with other outfits that send cargo (air or bus).0

@Sandra735 I'm only talking about myself here. I'm over at the Vet's office on a regular basis with critters. They have a great scale that any critter can stand on. I always weigh myself there while I'm waiting. Nobody cares, nobody watches and it's very accurate. You'll figure this out, don't you worry.0

Ok - maybe that is what she meant.
As a health professional myself, I don't agree with that either - I havent found that people weighing themselves (some people just ask to weight themselves while they are at the surgery and we have the scales) or us weighing them leads to weight gain.
