Relatives of mine were sent to study in China under Government to Government exchange programs (2-4 years) and they'd all arranged VPN paid services prior to their departure. They managed to continue using US, UK based sites as they'd done prior to their studies@the Military Academy/University there.

Last time i was in China, for a business trip, like 5 years ago. Couple of sites I was working at, were blocked. Nowadays, I use regular chrome addon, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/veepn-unlimited-free-fast/majdfhpaihoncoakbjgbdhglocklcgno , it can be useful if your isp or government are blocking sites.
