Loosing weight

Every since Covid 19 hit the planet and I am a front line healthcare worker wearing a mask for 12 hours plus a day.
I have gained 20 lbs and have horrific acid reflux and belching! Our gallbadder releases bile and our stomach releases gasteric juices to aide us in digestions however, we are inhaling all of that back into our system. Our teeth, gums and oral hygiene are suffering as well! Our food is not properly metabolizing because of this To be quite honest, I feel like crap most of the time.
Looking for support and motivation of some type to help get this weight off, I am defintely not eating more than before! It is very frustrating!!!

Sorry, but you don't gain 20 pounds in 6 months without eating more and moving less. Even an extra 70 calories a day can add up. Eat healthier, move more and wear a mask. Thank you for work as a healthcare technician, please stay safe. Talk to your physician.11

I am an essential worker and wear a mask all day long. I’ve lost over 25 lbs because I track my calories. Wearing a mask wont make you gain weight; it’s absurd to imply that it would.
Eating more calories than you need makes you gain weight. Maybe you eat the same but exercise less now; that would also make you gain weight.
It has NOTHING to do with the mask.
FYI I cannot WAIT until I don’t have to wear a mask anymore and ONLY do so where required. It just isn’t making anyone gain weight....14 -

Have you thought if seeing a doctor? What you describe isn’t a thing. It sounds more like you’ve may be experiencing the symptoms of GERD - possibly as a result of gaining weight (I am NOT a doctor, so obviously take what I have to say with a grain of salt). While reflux can lead to bad breath, and the excess acids in your mouth can erode teeth and gums,, I would need to see a serious amount of reputable peer reviewed studies to support your assertions that we are inhaling bile and gastric juices causing us to not not properly metabolizing our food.
If you’re a smoker or drink a lot of coffee, that can aggravate gastric distress and GERD, as can other changes in diet.
If you truly haven’t changed what you’re eating, and have gained 20 lbs, it’s time to see a doctor. Yes, stress and changes in sleep can affect your lepton and ghrelin levels which can lead to weight gain, but what you’re describing doesn't seem likely.
I hope you find the answers you’re looking for.4 -
There's no reasonable, well-founded scientific/medical evidence that masks trigger or worsen reflux and belching, or otherwise affect digestion. Something that does? Stress and anxiety. As a front-line healthcare worker, you've been under a tremendous level of stress, truly tremendous. That's in addition to the stress the pandemic causes the general population because of changes in routine and fears of contagion (for ourselves and others).

Masks are a visible, tangible, irritating symbol of what we're going through. That makes them a natural target.
If you've gained 20 pounds since March (guessing at what you think of as the start date), that's 20 pounds over about 9 months, or about 2.2 pounds a month, or 7777 calories above maintenance per month, or about 259 calories per day. That's a little over two tablespoons of peanut butter, 2.5T of butter or other oil, a handful of nuts, a few cheese cubes, a couple of (5-oz) glasses of wine, one craft beer - not that whole list, just *one* of those things daily, or some combination of smaller bits. Speaking as someone who's been losing at about 1-2 pounds a month for most of the past year, that number of calories is pretty much impossible to recognize in our consumption, unless weighing food and tracking very, very carefully.
The good news is that you don't need to make a big cut in intake. Minor eating changes should take you below weight-maintenance calories, and into the realm of slow loss.
Best wishes!13 -
This is a new one. The mask made me fat. :laugh:12

Erm - if your food wasn't properly metabolizing you would be extracting less calories from it and not more.
" I am defintely not eating more than before!" - then you must have added 20lbs of water weight, does that sound likely to you? Noticed any very significant oedema?
Thank you for working so hard for the community but now it's time to take care of yourself too, time to start tracking your food intake accurately.11 -

I'm using this one for myself 😂😂5 -
I KNOW frontline healthcare workers who have maintained their weight during this period, as well as those who have lost weight. I don't think it's the mask . . .6

Right? As an essential employee, I work with 300 ish other essential employees. Some of us have lost, some gained, and some have maintained. Nothing whatsoever to do with wearing a mask.2
