so this has been happening more frequently now...all of a sudden I have the overwhelming urge to go bury my face in a box of chocolates, a bag of crackers, a bowl of cereal, or pretty much anything else I can find. i'm wondering if you guys have any tips on what to do when I run into this. If I can wait a few minutes or distract myself, usually the craving goes away, but its really hard sometimes! any suggestions?

get a hammer and smash your thumb, instantly your cravings will be gone, if you want something less painful though, I listen to a meditation cd on my ipod called sacred body, its relaxing and its a guided meditation so she has you imagine different things, it's pretty neat and it's designed for weightloss. I also got a french program for my computer I do that sometimes, or pick up a book, or do a crossword puzzle.0

Don't buy any junk!! If you have something in the house that's partially healthy, but not so much if you eat a ton of it, hide it! Put it somewhere that if you have to go searching for it and it is too much trouble to get out, you will be less likely to munch on it. Also, if it's something sweet you're craving, go for some fruit...if it's salty you want, get a small bag of popcorn!! Hope this helps a little!!0

carrots. you can get 'baby carrots' which are cut really really small. They are crunchy and sweet, so hopefully will get that urge / craving taken care of!0

I drink water, tea, coffee, until I am about to burst.
I got rid of all the sweets in my house, and it has helped a ton.
I get out of my house if I think I am going to overeat.0 -
not keeping it in the house does help. Also, find foods that satisfy the craving without being harmful to your calorie count. Sugar free hot cocoa, chocolate rice cakes with a little agave nectar or peanut butter, fat free pudding...yes, I have a sweet tooth too. I have been on MFP for over a year now and I am able to better understand my cravings and mostly I crave those foods when I haven't been eating enough calories on a consistant basis or when I am stressed and tired. All these things are easily fixed without the box of chocolates going through the system. If you are reading this and think "nope just want chocolate" I would say one candy bar is not going to kill you and savor every bite, lickable finger and inside package lining, and then don't cave for at least another two weeks! Good luck my sweet tooth friend! ~Corina0

A nutritionist once told me "if you are not hungry enough to eat an apple, you're not hungry". When I get the the chocolate craving (like this afternoon), I go cut up an apple and munch is SLOWLY0

I agree with not buying it! If its in my house I eat it...so as rule of thumb I dont buy anything I would be upset with myself for eating. Even 100 calorie packs dont work for me bc I dont stop at just one. I used to say it was for my kids...they liked the snacks, but if I shouldnt eat it, should my kids? I have cereal a lot for a snack, but I choose to buy healthy cereals.
BUT if it has to be in your house...some tips I have would be to drink a very large glass of water first....10 minutes later, if you are still hungry have a small snack. OR get up and do something in your house. There is always something that needs picked up, dusted, vaccuumed, washed, etc. When you are done with that, if you are still hungry, have a small snack! I usually end up not snacking after this, only bc I find a million more things I could be getting done! OR call a friend just for a chat. I call my best friend and we never talk less than a half hour--whether we have anything special to talk about or not--then if Im still hungry---you get the idea!
I also eat SOMETHING every 3-3.5 hours, even if its just an apple, to keep myself from getting too hungry and binging!0 -
I understand about the junk food having to be in the house. I refuse to buy the junk food but my husband goes out and buys it anyway. So I put it all in a pile for him and everytime I look at it I think of manure. :0 I know but it helps change the thinking process because that is exactly what junk food is to the body - CRAP!
As for craving sweets - I try to treat myself to something I really want to eat and that I feel is worth the calories every week or two. It has to be worth the extra exercise. Then I go to a place get it and eat it. I mean I relish it - the whole experience I don't just wolf it down. If I want ice cream I go to an ice cream parlor - sit at a table order a small scoop and then eat it slowly, savoring each bite. I don't take it home so that I don't mentally associate it with home. I have to play mind tricks with myself.
When all is said and done it is all about the frame of mind. When I am in the kind of frame of mind I am in now - that taking care of myself is a priority - I can do it.
However, when I am not in the right kind of frame of mind to take care of myself - I will make all kinds of excuses.0 -
I think you aren't really hungry (listen to your tummy!) but some things just TASTE so good! Try drinking water or flavored water or my favorite trick - brush and floss your teeth. The flossing is key for me cuz I hate to do it so I won't want to eat and have to do it again. Or, do like I did when the baby was screaming and I thought I would go crazy - get the cell phone, go outside and call someone fun.0
