My wife thinks I'm a bird

So I usually make my own food up for the day. But I was running late today and the wife is working from home today so she offered to put together my food for me.

Now to put this in context, I'm 6' 2" 185 lbs and not trying to lose weight (I already lost my 55 lbs) but rather trying to gain muscle. That being said, my maintenance calories is about 2800 or so, so I'm running off a 3000 calorie + exercise cals diet which means about 3350.

So I open up my food bag when I get to the office and I have:

1 serving of whole wheat pretzel sticks
1 Frigo light string cheese stick (one? really?)
1 Carb control Dannon yogurt
1 serving of our low cal turkey chilly
1 apple
1/2 cup of almonds
1 atkins protein bar (peanut butter and chocolate)

I blinked, looked up, then looked back in. I'm doing it in my head and I come up with about about 970 cals. Um, ok. Well, lets see, I had about 450 cals for breakfast so that's about 1420 cals until dinner.

CRAP, I don't want to say anything to her cuz I know she was trying (and she's usually VERY good at this stuff). But I'm thinking, really? Where's the 6 oz of turkey breast , wheres the other frigo stick, wheres my V8 (low sodium), where's the carrots and peapods, where's the whole grain brown rice?

Damn, now I gotta drive to Subway in the middle of the day and find something that's not completely chocked full of sodium. I usually try to get at least 1800 calories in by 4:00 or else I'm not even gonna be close.

LOL! I love my wife, and I appreciate the attempt, but man, what does she think? I'm a 14 year old girl?

I guess I learned my lesson, always check the food Steve! Always!

Subway makes salads...maybe get that to reduce the sodium from the bread, and then grab a couple bottles of milk for extra carbs/protein? The apple bites are nasty though, don't bother with those.

LOL I'd have a hard time packing food for a guy who is counting calories, too. Unless I knew what he was supposed to be eating or how many calories he wanted in the bag I'd probably pack about 800 for him...around what I pack for myself! LOL She tried! I think it'd be okay to tell her, next time, what you're shooting for calorie-wise, though. Wouldn't you say something if she did your laundry and kept turning your whites pink?

haha true. Out of that, all I would be eating is the serving of chilly, apple, and some veggies

well, to be fair, I don't eat that in one sitting. I limit each meal to under 500 and each snack to under 300 (I have 4 meals and 4 snacks a day, about 1 every 2 hours or so)

And trust me, the problems you guys have with eating OVER your calories, it's nothing compared to trying to find 3300 calories A DAY worth of food that's healthy AND won't cause me to have to take a second mortgage out on my house. Creativity isn't really my strong suit.

yeah, I was thinking about that, I have to look it up and see what their calories are though, 250 cals wouldn't be enough, but I imagine if I grab some sunflower seeds and a skim milk that should get me close to 400 without going sodium crazy.

You could double the meat, add bacon and cheese.

oop, I lied, it's only 22 ALMONDS (I didn't look close at the almonds). lol, 22? That's about 1/2 of what I usually eat. Doh! that means about 150 calories less.

Speaking of Subway, why don't/ can't they offer sandwiches with less sodium? It really irritates me that they tout the "eat fresh" and healthy meals when they load up on unwanted sodium. GRRR.

it's the bread (and the cured meats of course).

Tough life, that's a lot of food to eat for a woman if she were following this plan, it's all about perspective.
