PIZZA QUESTION!!!

Hello MFPers!!!

I need your expertise in figuring out cals in something!!

I'm going to an italian resto tonight, it's one of those one's that has a woodburning oven, and then make individual, thin crust pizza's the size of your dinner plate, i would say 10'' diameter (then you cut it yourself!)

i'm trying to figure out how much the dough/crust would be! you can add your own toppings so you can skip cheese entirely...
so a thin crust, 10'' dough base...what do you think??? so far the estimates i'm getting are between 800-1000...

i'm wondering if this is similar to california pizza kitchen? i've never been there but they do have individual sized pizza's...says the website!

PS. you can skip the sauce and the just brush the dough with olive oil :D
  • Sounds delicious! Topped with oodles of veggies :]

    800-100 sounds about right

I don't think it's THAT high in calories.

I'd probably compare it more to Boboli, and then add 25% if you're concerned its too low.

Oops! disregard, now that I read that link -- it gives the calories for 1 slice! So yea, you're estimate is probably spot on.

No, it would be less than that. I would guess between 500-600.

depends on the amount of cheese and fatty meats you top it with. Anywhere from 350 to 1100 calories,
  • It's great that you are trying to figure it out ahead of time. You can see if they make a smaller kid-sized pizza. If not then pack it with veggies if you can eat a pizza that way - no sauce or cheese - then it isn't really a pizza BUT do it that way anyway. Also, nothing says you have to eat the whole pizza. Eat half and if you would eat it if it went home with you, leave it at the restaurant. Lastly if you can get in a bit more exercise today that will help too. Enjoy!
  • Just my opinion...but it works for me...if I'm debating eating something..but cannot figure out the nutrition facts, nor can I get the facts from someone knowledgeable....I'd skip it..and eat something else. It beats the heck out of adding too few..or too many calories..and fat, carbs, sodium, and sugar.....every gram..every calorie counts..too few, and you cheat yourself..too many, and you could potentially cause your deficit to be decreased. It's up to you tho...is it really worth it? Or, just say screw it..and call it a cheat day.

I was actually looking at pizza's today (in M&S) and they were all pretty much 450+ cals for half a pizza.

800 - 1000 cals sounds about right I am afraid!

Perhaps you could ask them to weigh the uncooked pizza dough. I make a homemade dough which is probably similar to the thin crust you've described and a 180G dough will run approx 500 Calories. Hope this helps and enjoy your meal out!

You may be able to call the joint and ask them if they have a Nutrional Guide for their food, most are required to do so.

Pizza dough is pretty much flour and water. Flour has a lot of calories. My unbleached all purpose flour has 100 cal per 0.25 cups and the pizza recipe I use has 1.75 cups flour per pizza (about 10"). So that would be 700 calories from the flour alone for the dough for the whole pizza. Not all that bad if you get 8 slices per pizza. Another danger zone is the sauce as it can be loaded with sugar. Maybe go with a white pizza loaded with veggies and mushrooms? You could probably sprinkle some parmesan on top or ask them to put a smaller amount of cheese (you can figure out a measurement that you can live with using the database). Enjoy your dinner and don't forget that one dinner out won't derail you.

    Thanks so much everyone!
I love all pizza, but pizza without sauce and cheese is actually pretty tasty...i'll put a bunch of veggies or do arugula + smoked salmon!

I would love them to weigh it but they are a pretty snotty restaurant! always super hard to get a reservation ;)
when you make about 180G could you tell roughly the diameter? is it about one plate size? thanks!

I would guess around 800 for the entire thing, tops, as long as you forgo the cheese and any meats. If I'm really hungry, then sometimes I'll eat half of the Dr. Oetker Ristorante Vegetale frozen pizza, which comes to 380 calories (it's 190 for 1/4 of the pizza). It's just vegetables and sauce. There's no meat or cheese.

Just a thought - I work in an Italian restaurant, and if you like pepperoni, I make my pizza lower cal by microwaving the pepperoni first to get out the grease. We do it upon request for customers too

Ask for a whole wheat crust if they have it as an option. At least it will be a little healthier.

Here's another thought - why don't you just eat half? Order a salad on the side, eat half of the pizza and then take the rest home for lunch or dinner tomorrow. Or share it with someone else at your table.

Yes, I would say it is plate size. It's a dough, so I can stretch it out and make it larger/thinner or make it smaller/thicker.

I face a similar dilemma when we go out for Pizza. We frequent a small, family owned pizzeria and they do not supply nutrition information for their products. For logging purposes I simply go into the MFP database and pick a commercial brand pizza (i.e. Pizza Hut) and use those numbers. We don't go there very often (at least not any longer) and when we do it's a special treat, so I don't get too hung up about tracking the exact number of calories.

I think you are pretty close! I make crust at home and that is about spot on to what my homemade thin crust with toppings is.

@daylitemag....it's the worst, isn't it! I wish you legally had to post nutritional information....and then the government should help these small family owned restaurants to do it so they don't go out of business :D

eating half is going to be way i'm going! but i still like to get a good sense of how much is in that half, SO THANKS!!!
  • Should be around 400-600 Calories without any topping ! Don't worry so much as all these calorific values are indicative only and are based on chemical experiments. How much calories will they yield in your body depends on your metabolic rate...so go ahead ....eat in moderation and enjoy you italian pizza
