Could it be a thryroid problem?

About two years ago I started to diet and excercise, succesfully losing about 50 pounds. I have continued to eat healthfully and to excercise, although I dropped from a 4 hour per week regimen to three. I had maintained my weight loss for many months, but the pounds have been creeping back on even though I still work just as hard. I generally eat only about 1500 calories a day and the 3 hour sessions of excercise I do per week include 40 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of resistance training. On the weekends I do indulge and go out to eat, but nothing I would consider out of reason. I do have a family history of hypothyroidism - my mother, my grandmother, an aunt and cousin all have the condition. I feel so out of control and upset that no matter how hard I try, I am heavier than I was when I reached my "peak". Could it be mainly due to having too little thryoid hormone?

Has anyone else experienced a similar situation that resulted in diagnosis of a thyroid condition?0

Do you have other symptoms? Before I was diagnosed as hypothryoid, in addition to suddenly gaining 10 lbs, my hair was falling out like crazy and my skin was so dry I kept joking that I was molting. My brain was also foggy.
If you get a blood test, make sure they check your T3 and T4, not just your TSH. It turns out my T3/T4 are low, even though my TSH has always been normal.
Good luck!0 -
yep, hypothyroidism can be hereditary so you may want to have it checked out. One thing I have learned though, get it checked by a specialist. These conditions can have very subtle markers that a GP may or may not pick up.0

You could have a thyroid condition, especially since it is prevalent in your family.
But your body also might need more than 3 hours of exercise per week, and you may need to log your weekend calories to see if it really is a reasonable indulgence or if there are some foods in there that are higher in calorie than you were aware.
You definitely need to have a blood test and get your thyroid checked out. There are more problems that hypothyroidism can cause besides just weight gain. (Trouble with memory, fertility problems, etc...) And you will need to have it checked regularly even if it is normal after your first test.
Hypothyroidism runs in my family as well, but I didn't have an issue with it until I was 32.
I hope this helps!

I do have other symptoms including severly dry skin, heightened cold intolerance, and I feel pretty worn out and groggy most of the time. I have kept track of what I eat on the weekends, I still generally get between 1500-1700 per day and I do get out and move I just don't work out. I only do an actual work out 3 hours during week, but it is very vigorous and I estimate I burn at least 450-500 calories per session. The weight gain was pretty sudden, I'm going to make an appointment and see if I can get in with a specialist. Thanks for your help!0
