Lost 32lbs...but waist measurement has not changed!? Is tha

Hey guys... I have a concern.
So I've lost 32 lbs since January...though my weight loss has stalled the past 3 months regardless of being on plan and exercising. I went from 195 to 163 and I'm 26 years old(female) and 5'7"...so that puts me at borderline normal weight range, right?
My concern is that my waist measurement has not changed in 32 lbs! My tummy has always been my problem area. I have never, since being maybe 6 years old, not had at least a "little" belly on me. I had thought it was just my body build. Even now, I have perfectly slim and proportionate arms and legs but a "belly" that could rival a 6 month pregnancy(I've never been pregnant).
What is up with that?!? How am I 4 lbs from being " in a normal range" with a gigantic stomach? How have I not lost even an inch there? I have a 42 inch waist, btw, at the largest point.
Is this normal?

Its genetic. Keep it up and you will reach your goal.0

I wouldn't say it's "not normal" but if it's causing you concern, go see a doctor about it. I would have thought your belly would become smaller with a 32 lbs loss but I'm not an expert on weight loss.0
-
What kind of exercise are you doing? No, I wouldn't think that is normal. Have you had a physical checkup lately?0

Sometimes we see ourselves as bigger than we really are, but if the measurements haven't changed, then it seems that something might be going on. I thought maybe an ovarian cyst? Any other female issues going on?0

coming from someone with a similar issues but mine has shrank finally, what is your workout routine like? Though some will disagree with me strength training ALL OVER is a huge aspect in losing fat (not just ab excercises, weights all over) also your diary isnt public, what is your diet like? what is your sodium intake like? and you could very well lose most of your tummy in that last 14 lbs, the first place to gain is typically the last place to lose. See my ticker though, in 69 lbs Ive gone from an 18/20 to a 14/16 some women are shaped differently. And if you have before and after pictures (well before and during) those are helpful to see too, sometimes others see what we dont see ourselves. Is it possible you arent measuring the same spots? do you have PCOS? have you talked to your doctor about the concern? there could be an underlying issue0

I don't think it's cause for worry. I've lost 22 pounds and gone down 2.5 sizes in pants but barely anything in shirt size. I think we're just all different.0

I don't have health insurance, so no, I haven't had a check up in...years. Which is bad, I know. I haven't really had a need, I've been pretty healthy. I am getting married next year though, and then I will go on fiance's insurance I will definitely get up to date on all that stuff then though.
For exercise, I jog for 30 min, usually twice per day(first thing in the AM and in the evening around 6pm). I also go on brisk walks(about 4.0 mph) and use free weights. I have an active job that requires me on my feet for 8+, walking around also.0 -
Have you lost inches anywhere? like your legs or arms? I know that there are some people that have a hard time losing weight in certain areas. For me its my butt. I lose weight quickly in my tummy but it takes for ever to lose it from my butt.0

Umm, female issues... Well, probably not related, but I was diagnosed with HPV, the type that causes cervical cancer 2 years ago and treated that... I had an ovarian cyst when I was like 13, but that wasn't a huge deal and problem solved itself. I've always had an extremely long cycle 33-34 days is the norm, usually only lasts for 2-3 days max. I also do not grow body hair under my arms, while everyone else in my family does--I've always been curious if that could indicate a hormone imbalance or maybe it's just me. Sorry if that's all TMI.0

I have to agree with the other to see a physician. I don't want to scare you, but this is a reason why it is better to see a physician. My friend always had a really big belly on her and small arms and legs. Everybody was telling her she had too much air or too much salt intake. When she turned 40 she went in for a regular check up and the doctor sent her for special testing. Turns out she had tumours. Thankfully they were benign. She had them removed and now she looks to be the size she should have looked.0

Everyone has a different area of their body that is the first to gain fat and the last to lose it. For me, it's my thighs. Since I started with MFP in March, I've lost nearly 4 inches from my waist but only 1/2" from my thighs. I also haven't really lost any up top and I know a lot of women complain they lose it there first. It sounds like you are just an apple shape and your belly fat is going to be the last to go. You might try doing some core work to try to tone the muscles up so that when the fat does start to disappear from there, you'll have some nice muscles waiting underneath.
P.S. My mom doesn't grow hair under her arms, either. Actually, she doesn't have much on her arms or legs. It's a genetic thing due to some American Indian ancestry.0 -
Gosh and golly, I am always amazed that Americans wait to be on their death beds before they see a doctor! How much can seeing one cost that you have to wait a year before doing so?0

I'm with everyone who is urging you to have a checkup ASAP. Too many things in our midsections that can cause problems. Once you've gotten the all clear by your doc, try Zumba for a little while. If you don't have access to inexpensive classes you can try it out by viewing videos of Zumba classes on YouTube. Here's why I'm suggesting it: I've only lost 1.4 lbs. in the 2 weeks since I started Zumba (at home, bought the videos on Amazon), but I've already lost 1.5 inches around my waist! It's the ONLY thing that has caused a drop in waist size for me. But get checked out first!!0

I also do not grow body hair under my arms,
Sorry, I know this is not helpful but I can't be the only jealous person about this!0 -

Depends on what needs to be done. I was having abdominal pains and got sent for an ultrasound and MRI. I don't remember how much the U/S was but the MRI was almost $2000. That's not including the doctor visit.0 -
You could also have a cyst in your liver like me. Mine is fine, not any type of medical issue so nothing needs to be done about it, but it causes fat in the midsection in people. I am hoping I can get my stomach down to an acceptable level for myself.0

Could it be bloating? Is your stomach sometimes smaller in the morning and larger in the evening? Do you have other bowel related issues (gas, cramps, strange bowel movements etc?)
I'm a healthy weight but my stomach is the place I store fat, and it makes it worse that I have food intolerances/IBS that causes constant bloating. I can give you some advice if you think this might be a factor?0 -
Unfortunately, it's been this way for 20 years. So I don't think it's bloating. Men in my family seem to have big bellies on one side, but I had yet to see women. Just lucky genes I guess. Ugh.0

Your profile does not post where you are from so I'll answer this under a couple of assumptions: You are either from canada or europe where there is socialized medicine and your expenses to see a physician are minimal, though in some countries a decent wait for a visit. OR you are one of the fewer and fewer americans who has never been without health insurance and you do not work the insurance department of a medical facility so you have only ever payed your itty bitty co-pay (which you probably complain about) and have no clue how much ROUTINE medical care costs.
Here is reality for the USA for an uninsured american: "Routine Well Visit" = $80-150 (by region, not income based clinics) "Normal Blood Work (CBC & Chem panel, maybe a glucose)" = $250-600 "More extensive testing (low energy levels, abdominal problems)" = $400-1000 Average MRI cost = $2000-4000 Average Ultrasound cost = $1500-2500 (for a diagnostic ultrasound not the cutesy 4d baby things you see advertised)
So just a "basic check up" can cost upwards of $750. If you cant afford health insurance you sure as heck cant afford that! How do I know this? I work in the medical field, dealing with costs and insurance daily, and oh wait, Im one of those uninsured americans!0 -
32 lbs is a huge weight loss, i don't think its normal that you have lost nothing in your waist. i'm also apple shaped so my stomach is slower to shrink than other places but having said that it still has shrunk with my weight loss and i've only lost 19 lbs compared to your 32. i think you should def. go have that checked out if you can. 42 inches sounds really big in proportion to your current weight.0
-
I'd also see a physician. But just to put you at ease, I have an apple-shaped body and the first places I lose weight are my hips and chest. I've been attempting to remedy this by weight training/circuit training - do you lift weights or just do cardio? Weights are the best way to remove inches from your frame.0

I have a really big problem losing inches around my waist, too. I finally nailed it down to a cortisol issue. Cortisol is a hormone in the body is produced that is supposed to be high in the mornings to get ya moving and then it tapers off in the day and is lowest at night so you can sleep. When you put excess stress on the body, it produces too much cortisol, and it can make you retain fat, specifically in the belly. It also causes sleep problems, a lethargic feeling all day, and second wind around 10 pm. If this sounds like you, you can have a cortisol test done at the doctor's. If you don't want to do that, then I suggest getting adequate sleep, forgo heavy cardio (puts excess stress on the body), cut out caffeine, and just in general de-stress your life. Good luck!0
-
Just for anyone who may also be having this issue, I thought I'd add my two cents.
I have lost over 25lbs to date, and haven't lost an inch. My current BMI is 24. I'm 5'4" or thereabouts. (161cm)
For this reason, I'm seeing a doctor next week. Typically, the first symptom listed for ovarian cancer is bloated belly. I have a few of the other symptoms, as well. Yikes! (I'm sure it won't be cancer. But better safe than sorry.)
I'm different from the OP, in that I have always been thin, thin, thin, with a flat, flat, flat (and I mean 1980s FLAT) belly! I gained a lot of weight over just a few years, with no explanation. I eat a very healthy diet and exercise almost daily. Indeed, cutting calories and exercising harder made me gain weight. So, this jiggly belly is new, and foreign, to me.
I eventually found a combination of factors that allowed me to lose weight. But the giant, 35-36" belly is still there. (My waist was 18" when I was 20, and maybe 24" when I was in my 30s.)
It's kind of comforting to read that other women have lost a substantial amount of weight, and not lost anything off their waists. Despite having lost over 25lbs, I'm still wearing the same size clothing.
In my case, it is not diet-related, as the foods that make up my diet have not changed significantly since my flat belly days. I think it may also be hormonal, as I approach the age of menopause, even though I have no signs of perimenopause, at this time.
I sure wish I LOOKED like I lost 25lbs. So far, only the scale is noticing.0 -
A couple things...
If you are running, and you are apple shaped, your stomach will be one of the last places it goes from.
If you measure at different times of day / times of month / how much salt you had that week measurements can vary a LOT.
I measured at the start, then one month in, and then two months in. Despite the fact I can tell my pants are looser on me, two months in my measurements somehow bounced back up to the same as when I started. I'm not worried. I place that down to my error or just variation in time of day, sodium intake, etc.
Personally (as an apple) I don't find jogging to do much for my midsection. I was running for a while before starting MFP (and so therefore didn't lose any weight). I could tell physical differences in my legs and back, but my waist stayed the same. Might be more useful for you to get measured by a professional for your bodyfat, and pay attention to that.
When you say you use free weights, how heavy are you lifting? I'd try to lift heavier. There's lots of good guides all over the 'net (and on here) for good, heavy weight lifting and compound movements. Also probably wouldn't hurt to try something that WILL target your midsection (zumba, 30 day shred, etc) a lot of aerobics type activities that involve stability/moving around.
And lastly, given your medical history, PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR. Maybe give it two more weeks and measure again, and if no change, see a doctor. Could be a symptom of something else. Could be completely benign, but wouldn't you rather know?0 -
A lot of people say we put on fat at the waist first and lose it last. I hope that's true, because I dropped from 198 to 171 lbs over a year and have so far lost nothing from my waist either. It is a bit frustrating!0
-
I wonder if this problem is indeed related to your hormones. Have you been tested for PCOS? You mention a previous ovarian cyst and women with PCOS are warned about difficulty with losing visceral fat.
Other than that to the poster replying about health insurance, there was no need to sound so rude. A lot of countries, the UK included do provide health care and even though we can pay for health insurance as an option here, which I do, it is of interest how much Americans pay for this.0
