Scale obsession!!

I need some advice!!
I have found myself (with the help of hubby) that I am obsessed with weighing myself. I know it's not good to weigh everyday. On top of that I get so discouraged when the scale doesn't change. I weigh the same time and the same way everyday. I don't know how to stop this. My husband took the scale and hid it so that I don't end up going insane. I know I have done well with losing weight but I just don't know how to stop this. I have decided to only weigh once a week. Hubby is only getting it out on Saturday's. Help, how do I stop. I feel like this is worse than smoking and I have been smoke free for 40 days.

The scale is just a tool, one of many in your weight loss goals.0

i too weigh myself every day... i think that once a week is a very good plan. i sometimes wish i could just do it once a week.. although when that number does go down i feel inspired and usually have a better day (nutrition-wise) than i would otherwise. sorry i'm not much of a help. i'm interested in what others have to say!0

I think its a good plan for hubby to hide it until Saturday's. Just like smoking...it will be tough the first few days/week then it gets much easier. Just hang in there. I used to be obsessed with the scale also.0

I like weighing myself daily but I will only record my weight on Friday mornings. I have a rule not to stress about it but it has been helpful to me as well. I know how my body will react to workouts, water, alcohol, bloating etc...0

Great job on quitting smoking! I did 200 days ago, its a great feat!
I weigh every day, nothing wrong with it if you use the info the correct way. That being said, use it as a motivator. If my weight goes up I chalk it up to muscle mass if I've had good workouts, if I haven't I take a good hard look at what I ate. Realize that water, time of month and forces beyond our control effect the weight. When I see it go down a smudge it motivates me to work even harder. Everyone's different, so if it's upsetting to you, only do it once a week.
Good luck and Keep the Quit!0 -
I weigh myself everyday...it keeps me focused and aware. I've learned not to let it get me down if I go up or stay the same. Its a good "checking in" tool.0

I weigh myself everyday. I have a spreadsheet (with a graph) that shows changes from day to day. I like to analyze what I eat and how it affects my weight fluctuations as well as my measurements (However, I only measure about once a month). I personally find that weighing myself everyday keeps me accountable. Just because I gain a pound in a day doesn't mean that's fat... I could have had a lot of sodium the day before (usually the case). So I just drink more water. The importance, for me anyway, is that I'm learning what foods affect my weight the most. I don't think it will become an obsession. More than anything, I'm just really interested in my body and how it reacts to what I eat and how much I exercise.0

I completly understand! This is me! I weigh every morning because I need some motivation to keep going but than if I dont see a loss or worse I see a gain than I get discouraged. I would strongly reccomend NOT weighing yourself more than once a week! and what you have done with your husband is exactly what I did and it wokrs! My hubby hides the scale and on Sat. Mornings he gets it out and we weigh in together. Its great because it helps to have someone who is encouraging you and someone to cheer you on when you have a loss or be there if theres a gain :-) Keep doing this and you will see more loss trust me! Another thing you can try to do is find other weighs to measure your success besides the scale, maybe measurments (do once a month) or a fitness goal. I just set some new goals myself, No fast food for thirty days and I want to walk a mile a day :-) these things will keep your mind off the number and remind you that you cant jsut go off what the scale says cause theres other ways besides your weight that you will see change like in how your body looks and how you feel. Another thing I do is chart my energy level for the day, if you track how much energy you have on a scale from 1-5 once a day you wiill start to see how much better your body feels inside in additon to how it looks outside :-) Keep up your hard work!!0

I am the EXACT same way! I am having a realllllly hard time not weighing myself every day. One of my friends on here and I are trying to do only Tuesdays. We are helping each other stick to it. If you want to switch to Tuesdays and join us, you're more then welcome!
Good luck!0 -
I do have some obsession issues with the scale. I am only supposed to weigh on Fridays but I weigh every morning and get furious when there is a slight gain. I know that there will be slight gains because of water weight/sodium intake etc but I just can't help it. :ohwell:0

I've committed to not weigh myself for the month of September and to only monitor my body with a measuring tape and fat caliper. If you don't have a fat caliper, stick to measurements. It really is a great way to see yourself transform, because we often change body composition (losing fat, gaining muscle) without necessarily losing weight.
If you think you're going to be tempted to weight yourself, have your husband hide the scale for a month. Or, better yet, throw it away. I have literally thrown scales in the trash because I was tired of the very same obsession you describe.
You can do it

i weigh everyday, but i dont make the slight fluctuations in weight bother me. I make notes (check in) once a week0

If you have pants or a dress that you are trying to fit into ( a goal outfit) try that on instead... because the scale does not always reflect the changes...
I have a pair of jeans that I used to wear, and try those on once a week, every week I feel a bit better in them and now I can do them up properly... is much more rewarding then a number on a scale!0 -
There are a lot worse things to be obsessed about... if you feel like weighing everyday, do it.
I weight myself all the time -- mostly out of curisity after a good workout, or a bad meal. I only "officially" weight myself on Monday morning. I track it then --- but only if it is lower than the week before. If I set my weight here everytime I weight, I'd be up and down 1-5 lbs every day

I used to do the same thing. Its a habit you must break. It takes about 21 days to form or reform a habit. Keep it hidden and only weigh in the once per week like you have planned. Eventually it will become a habit that is better for you.0

weighing daily is not an obsession, it is a healthy practice that will allow you to stay aware of your weight
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/338630-weigh-in-day
to quote from that thread:
You get used to the fluctuations, and you get to see immediately how foods affect you personally.
There are a lot of scientific studies in reference to daily weighing, and the results are that you are able to keep the weight off.
the trick is to not obsess over the "number" don't look at your number as a good or a bad thing, just look at is as another tool.
Daily weighing was the topic of a weight loss study I am involved with. I have lost 37 lbs in 7 months weighing daily, and tracking my calories here on MFP. (and yes I only log here on my official weigh in day)

I don't think we can throw it away. lol I was a very expensive scale. He wouldn't dare but it did hide it from me and I have had to have self control not to care or go and find it. Thanks for the advice though. I need to find a measuring tape to take my measurements.0 -

Now if you had said you are weighing multiple times in a day, then *maybe* an obsession, otherwise just a healthy practice

I too weigh daily. I think it does become a problem, though, when you start getting more stressed than focused. Daily weighing works for me, but it just isn't for everyone. The scale is just a tool, one of many in your weight loss goals.

I had the exact problem except it was every time I went into the bathroom. The scale was there so I automatically just weighed myself even if I already did an hour to so before.
I threw mine away. I had too. I'm not saying you have to but it was the only thing that made it stop. After a few months I got super curious and bought one....
I got on to find that nothing had moved even though the tape measure and the clothes said so. My husband returned it that hour.
I say just have him give it to you the one time a week and not let you know where it is. That may help.
I am way too pushy to have it hidden, I would bowl him over until I got it back :grumble: Good luck!0 -
I weigh every day. Not because I am obsessed, but because it helps keep me focused. I am on the Hcg diet, which actually has you weighing everyday, both in the losing weight phase and during maintenance phases to keep you motivated and to help keep you accountable to what you eat and how it affects your body. Do what works for you...if seeing the daily fluctuations is discouraging, weigh in once a week...if you approach weighing in as described above, weigh daily. everyone is different. Good luck on your continued successes!0

I am the same way, that it got so bad, I had to tell my bf to remove it from where I knew where it was! I would highly suggest taking measurements, and focusing on that! I have lost so many inches rather than weight! which is really what matters! good luck!0 -
Just don't ever stop getting on it. I think that's even worse. I got advice from a workout video years ago to stop getting on it, because muscle weighs more than fat and blah blah blah...and it was probably worse thing I ever did. I'm a believer in "this too shall pass".0

I'm not going to stop getting on it. I think it was more that I was getting on it multiple times a day and then getting pissed when the numbers weren't moving. I will however weigh once a week. I don't want to be getting mad at myself every time I get on it. I don't have a measuring tape so I don't know if my measurements have improved or not.0
