Mayo Clinic Diet

Has anyone tried this diet? My girlfriend wants me to go on this diet with her, she says she's done it in the past with good results, but it sounds a little fishy to me.

Diet is 12 days on and 2 days off. Glass of grapefruit juice, 2 eggs any style, 2 slices of bacon for breakfast. Grapefruit juice, meat and salad for lunch. Grapefruit juice meat and green, yellow or red veggies.

You're supposed to be able to eat as much of this as you want as long as you only eat at meal times. And you can eat all the butter and seasoning's you want on your veggies and as much of any kind of salad dressing on salads.

None of this sounds right to me! Should I tell my girlfriend that she's crazy and just continue with my calorie counting?

Thanks for any help or info you can provide about this "diet"

Im not a dietitian but that cant be healthy......

Id say stick to what works, and counting calories watching fat / sugar/ carb intake has to be a better HEALTHIER way to lose weight and keep it off because its a life style change not a "diet". thats my 2 cents.

This is actually kind of a "scam", its not associated with the Mayo Clinic. Its just some fad diet, that you probably can drop some weight using, but since you can't stick with it, the weight will come back. I would pass on it, if it were me. Hope that helps.

If it sounds fishy, it probably is.

The grapefruit juice is probably there to prevent scurvy since you're not allowed any other fruits. Great, green/yellow/red vegetables. What about carrots? Sweet potato? Orange peppers? Squash? Why two slices of bacon, specifically? Why not oatmeal and eggs?

Any way of eating that restricts a food group can lead to malnutrition if it's not done carefully. This plan is so restrictive it's going to lead to malnutrition regardless.

Well as we all know the only way to lose weight effectively is to count calories. With the diet that you described you could easily go way over the amount of calories that you should be eating. And what's with the grapefruit juice?! I'd say stick to what your doing, GOOD LUCK! You and your gf could count calories together too.

Thank you so much for your advice! I didn't think it sounded legit...Bacon and Butter and eating until I was over stuffed so that I wouldn't want to snack sounded crazy. I can't see how that could be healthy, but my girlfriend swore that it works and fast. I think I'll just tell her good luck but that I'm gonna keep doing this the way I've been doing it.

    Thank you!

The Mayo Clinic Diet continues to cause considerable confusion. This is not an “official” Mayo Clinic Diet. The Mayo Clinic health center (based in Rochester, USA) categorically states that it had never endorsed any diet plan until December 2005, when it was announced that the official Mayo Clinic Plan was available via the Internet.

The clinic does however provide a number of guidelines for healthy eating - including the new Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid (aka Mayo Clinic Food Pyramid).

What is the unofficial “Mayo Clinic Diet”?
What was supposedly the Mayo Clinic Diet is a fad or crash diet. It is based around grapefruit, lots of salad and protein, and little carbohydrates. Weight loss was supposed to be in the region of 50-55 pounds in 10 weeks.

It's not part of the Mayo Clinic the Mayo clinic has better healthy lifestyle changes

I eat bacon on Atkins................almost every morning. And fried eggs in the bacon grease.........

I have lost 30 pounds and my cholesterol is better than ever........

Grapefruit is supposed to help you shed fat faster. My endocrinologist told me that..........

I knew you'd be by Lean. I know you eat bacon too. But most people here don't follow Atkins...or anything resembling it. I support Atkins for the most part though and think overall it's a healthy plan.

    Ha haa.......LOL............

I do not eat the typicl bacon that is found in the common grocery stores though. I eat preservative free and nitrate free uncured bacon.

Huge, huge difference in the taste, but it will go bad quickly if not cooked promptly..........

I am trying to find a local source, straight from a farm to get bacon and sausage...........fresh, fresh meats. I found an amish farm locally where I get chicken from, it is free range chicken. Also found a farm that raises grass fed beef.

I am slowly, but surely going pure natural and organic with everything.

Way to go with the organic. It can run a higher bill, but clearly you're putting in the effort to make it work for you. My biggest problem with bacon, or cured meats in general, is the salt content and nitrates used to preserve..:noway: :noway: Plus, who eats just one piece of bacon? I think many people eat 2-3, or more for those willing to admit it.

In the Atkins book, that is one of the biggest things that Dr Atkins mentioned..............

Cutting out cured and processed meats............

I pay almost 6.00 for a 1 pound package of uncured, natural and preservative free bacon........It tastes unbelieavably GOOD...............yes, it is expensive, but worth it to me.

Our neighborhood Coop has a deli that sells preservative free deli meats.............they are between 10 and 12 dollars a pound, so needless to say I do not buy that very often, but it is a nice treat.

Again, it is unbelievably different in the taste and you will never want to eat deli meats, bacon, sausage again that is processed or cured once you eat it natural and uncured.
