Half marathon question

I am running my first 10k next Saturday and I'm excited about it. I have been running quite a bit in preparation (4x per week ranging from 3-6 miles each day). I just got invited to run a half marathon the following Saturday. Is this too much too soon? Just looking for some advice from more experienced runners.

Thanks!
Matt

  • Personally I don't think your longest runs are long enough yet for a half marathon. I trained for a half marathon but then did a 10K, a soccer tournament and that half marathon all within about 5 weeks total. I ended up with a stress fracture which I'm sure was partly from not doing the right recovery activities and partly from doing to much in too short of an amount of time. I would wait on the half marathon and get your long runs up to 10-12 miles

What is your longest run so far?
If a 10k is your longest to date I would hold off on a half marathon until I am up to at least 10 miles for the long run.

My $.02: it is a little too soon. Although you can "muscle" your way through a half while undertrained, I can assure you that you won't find it an enjoyable experience.

Training for a new distance is part of the fun. Looking at your schedule each week and saying " I have to run 10 miles this week and I've never done more than 8, how will I make it?" is all part of the journey.

Look for another half a little further out and take the time to train properly.

I have been running since early May this year, about the same as you 4x per week, 3 - 7 mi on weekdays and 9 - 13 mi on weekends. The last week of August / first week of September I ran 3 half marathons in 7 days. I feel healthy and ensure that I manage my nutrition prior to my long runs (carb loading for two days prior). I always rest the day before the long runs. You could always do a run / walk for the half marathon, run 5 mi, walk 2, run 5, walk 1 or something like that. It really depends on how you feel physically and mentally. Running for me is as mental an exerise as it is physical.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I will hold off on the half marathon and train for it. No sense getting hurt now that I'm really enjoying running! :)

I'm with the majority on this one. I've worked my way up to just under 10 miles over the last month...can't imagine having to crank out even 3.5 miles in the next couple of weeks to hit 1/2 distance. Running 4 times a week is a great starting point to start adding distance! Good luck on the 10k!

The longest distance I've done was 7.8 miles. I feel pretty good after my long runs, so I guess I'll just start trying to add distance each week (1 mile extra per week max?).

    thanks again,
    Matt

Yes I believe 1 mile per week is the "safe" way to do it. They say 10% per week but I think only a mile of that should be on your long run
