Bursitis?

I've totally given up running because it was giving me hip pain, specifically behind the femur. After about 15 minutes of running it would ache, and then if I pushed it (which I usually did) it would start to pop. The next day it would still pop and be really sore to pressure. The pain would usually go away in a day or so, but inevitably come back when I ran next. I never get this pain during any other type cardio besides running. I've googled my symptoms and I'm thinking it's bursitis. Not sure though.

Your thoughts?

Only a doctor can actually give you a diagnosis, and you should probably have yourself checked out to make sure there isn't something serious going on. You should also stop running and do other forms of cardio so that you do not seriously injure yourself.

it probably is bursitis... although you really do need to go to a doctor. they can give you meds for it, plus you don't want it to get infected while its inflamed. my boss had the exact same symptoms as you and that's exactly what his problem was except i think his came from being over weight. but anyways you really should go get it checked out.

I have bursitis in my right hip. Please, see a doctor before you resume running. When my pain first started last fall, I ignored it (push through pain and all that jazz....). I kept going and going and ended up with a fatigue stress fracture in it.

Had I just stopped running for a few weeks to allow it to heal, I would have avoided the stress fracture. So, please... see a doctor and cut out the running until you can see someone. It isn't worth it, trust me.

I have similar pains, but mine is from arthritis (sports injury).

I would suggest getting it checked out; maybe some physical therapy. Or if you're interested in trying home remedies, find some therabands and exercise your hip/leg in ways you don't normally stretch your muscles. This is a lot of what my physical therapy is.

Thanks for the replies. I DID give up running 100%. I never really liked it anyway ;) I LOVE indoor cycling, and it doesn't bother my hip a bit. I will get it checked out, and in the meantime a good foam-rolling sesh might work wonders.

I find an anti-inflammatory (Advil) works really well at getting the pain under control. I also ice it - 20 mins on/20 mins off. It'll help with the pain.

I have had 6+ pelvic stress fractures at this point. I just started running again after taking 6 months off (again). I took a year off last time. I'm thinking running may just not be for me, but it's the best exercise and when I have been doing it awhile, I love it. Right now I hate it, and a week into it, hip pain. I know what it means, I have been here many times before. Skipping from daily runs to every other day. Problem persists to constant hip pain. So, I take a few days off. I do not need another stress fracture. Feel fine. Run again. Hip pain again. But, sitting pain free at the moment, even though I ran this morning for 15 minutes. So we will see. Taking calcium supplements. Eating double dairy calcium. Eating right. I want to run a 5k but can only manage a mile now, and not cardoi wise, hip pain wise. I did run 2 miles but my hips hurt for 2 days so thinking I'm not ready for that yet. So I can run a mile without pain and thats what I'll do. Slowly, gradually increase. In the meantime, alternate cardio, recumbent bike and elliptical machine.
