does horse riding count?

does anyone else out there have horses? when i ride i consider this a pretty intense work out if i'm riding for an hour or so. does this count as a mini work out? (my legs and thighs sure think it does)
would love to talk to other members who have/enjoy horses!

It sure does, if your heart rate does go up then its a work out invest in a HRM.
I have seen my daughter start taking off layers from her workout on the horse,gets off begging for a bottle of water.
For sure it is ! Its an olympic sport right!!!

It does burn calories, not as much as a regular cardio. But it does burn calories and work your body.0

i definitely count it as exercise, especially riding bareback. i would highly recommend getting an HRM.0

This is great news! I ride about 2-4 times each week. Especially in the spring/summer when we can really work, it sure does feel like a workout!0

Yes, riding counts..but if you are riding at a slow walk - it is the actual physical exercise of tacking up, and tacking off that would be the bigger exercise...if riding for you is trotting and loping it burns a bit more calories. Long rides burn more of course, but I think we need the riding for theraputic purposes..as Winston Churchill said" There is something on the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man" I ride daily..some short rides, some long...hopefully it will all add up to pounds off!!!!0

Remember you can lead a horse to water, but don't push them in because there's nothing that smells worse than a wet horse; however if you can get them to do the backstroke, then you've got something.

It's listed in the data bank as "horseback riding". Very good for you. In the summers I don't even try my calories and exercise because I spend so much time on a horse. I break colts and do tons of ground work with them and I know that that burns even more calories because I'm out of breath and sweeting when I'm done, makes me appreciate my broke horses that when I ground work them I really don't have to move my feet.0

Riding is up there with dancing and snowboarding as one of the most vigorous and calorie-burning workouts you can do! Are you a hunter-jumper? I think jumping makes you burn more, especially if you are running full courses.0

Very true. The faster the horse moves the better work out you get. Also going up and down hills is a great core work out. Last year I started this colt and was working alot in an arena then I took him out for a couple of hours riding up and down hills. The next morning my abs were so sore. It's like pilates but way more fun0 -
Absolutely, and nothing gets the heart rate moving quite as rewardingly as a good full body curry. Doesn't hurt the horse either..
I recently wore my HRM to the barn for a short ride, long groom and 20 minutes of barn chores.. Tons of calories were burned..

I disagree - a wet dogs smells much worse, and I don't even want to think about what a wet pig smells like... :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:0
