I was just at Econo Foods and they had organic quinoa in the bulk section with all the nuts and trail mix. I don't know about any of those places. I've never seen those before besides Walmart.

I know that walmart and publix both carry quinoa. It's usually by the rice or healthy food/ organic section. My walmart (super walmart) stocks in in the cereal isle at the end with Cascadia farms products and Bob's red Mill products. Not sure if every walmart is the same but just ask they should be able to help you find it.

I have found it in Publix and Kroger. In Publix it was in the pasta or rice area and at Kroger it was in the 'natural foods' section.

I have heard that it is high in protein - is that true? How do you fix it?

I get it at Whole Foods, Publix, and Kroger. You just have to find where they have the organic stuff, like a pp said. I've also found it at Publix in the gluten free area.

We have a Smith's near us (Kroger affiliate) and they carry quinoa near the rice and also in their various organic sections.

Most stores have an 'alternative foods' section where they have all of the 'health' or 'organic' foods. You are likely to find it there by the gluten free pasta.

Rinse it first to get the bitter taste off. Then follow directions on the back.I caver it to bring to boil as it can pop and fly all over. I used chicken stock, no fat, low sodium tonight. I used it in place of rice when I made General Tso's chicken and stir fry veggies. YUM! It can be eaten like oatmeal with cinnamon etc. Do a search of the old message boards. There was one this morning talking about other reciepes etc. Good luck.

Some brands come prerinsed to remove the saponin. So not all require rinsing.

And I agree with using the chicken/veggie stock, it adds a great flavor to it.

I usually get mine at Wal-Mart, but it took me forever to find it there. It was on the top shelf of the rice aisle. (I'm short - so the top shelf was above my line of vision!). The one I got from there was a blue-ish/green-ish box and I think the brand was Ancient Harvest, or something like that.

To whoever asked about how to fix it - it cooks pretty much just like rice does. If you get the kind in a box, you usually don't have to rinse it. I like to cook it in chicken broth and add a few veggies to make a quinoa pilaf (like you would rice). I've also been known to pour a little milk and sugar in it and have it like a hot cereal for breakfast. AND it's really good cold on top of a salad. Quinoa is very versatile and can be sweet or savory. And, yes, it does have a crap-ton of protein in it!
  • My store has it in the cereal isle near the oatmeal.

Just like rice. Boil 1/2 cup water, pour in 1/4 cup quinoa, reduce heat, cover and simmer until fluffy-ish. Be careful not to let it burn - stinks if you do that!! 1/4 cup dry will make about 1/2 cup cooked - it goes a long way!

Quinoa is cooked like oatmeal, it has a nutty flavor. I've had it like oatmeal for breakfast with a little milk and fresh fruit, but I've also made a cold salad out of it with a balsamic vinegarette.
