um no muscle does not mean looking like a man. yes you should try some weights, don't worry u'll get better. I would suggest trying a personal trainer for one or two sessions if you can afford it or maybe taking a strength training class.0
-
you will not get bulky eatting at a deficit its impossible
and yes do some strength training it will boost your metabolism and help you loose weight faster as will resistance training ( for example on the eliptical )0 -
Yes, weights help. You won't look bulky and manly looking, because since you're female your body doesn't produce the necessary testosterone to do that. Your cardio can be alot more effective if you do the strength training beforehand.0

for every 3 lbs of muscle an extra 120 calories a day is burned without doing a thing0

No, you will not bulk up if you lift weights. You will not look like a man. Strength training is good for you.
This would be a good thread for you to read:

Weight training will way more good than harm! The only way you are going to look big, bulky and manly is if you spend 4-6 hours in the gym every day and/or partake of certain medicinal supplements.0
-
Women don't have the testosterone it takes to bulk up like a man.0
-
adding muscle absolutely doesn't mean that you will bulk up and look like a man. Muscle burns fat, your body will break down fat before it turns on itself, ie muscle. Try adding weights or talk to a trainer to find out how to add them in so that you don't bulk up but get the long lean look.0
-
It takes time & intense training to get your muscles to bulk-up & also it requires lifting heavier weights that you can only last for 6-8 reps to have a body builder look so if you only lift a light dumbbells that you can manage w/ 15 reps or more then it is unlikely you get bulk-up. Also strength training is very important so as to sculpt your body & decrease body fat%, something that cardio cannot do. I suppose you neither won't like to have a sagging skin or a jiggling arms once you lose all the weight. Being skinny fat isn't sexy looking either.0

It's nearly impossible to bulk up like a man unless you intentionally attempt that look... Read this.0 -

Two of the biggest myths and misconceptions of weight training.
1) Women who lift weights will bulk up like a man
2) Lifting doesn't burn as much calories as cardio0 -

This is simply not true. I believe it comes to 6 calories extra per pound if I recall correctly. Here is the article http://articles.latimes.com/2011/may/16/health/la-he-fitness-muscle-myth-20110516
To the OP, muscle will not make you look like a man because unless you are going to take steroids your body simply does not have the hormone to do so except for a small percent of women. On the other hand the muscle will make you look more tone and healthy while at the same time you will be nice and lean.0 -

And what is 6 multiplied by 24?

This is one of the biggest mistakes most women make when trying to lose weight. Women are not capable of bulking up like a man without supplements - we just don't have the right hormones to do so. Muscle IS the fat burner of your body...the more lean muscle you have, the less fat you have. That's also why so many fad diets are an epic fail - sure, you lose a lot of weight to begin with, but it's because you're practically starving yourself and most of the weight you lose is muscle, so when you go off the diet your body has no way of burning the foods you're eating again and here comes all the weight back and then some. WEIGHT TRAIN!!!0 -
Everybody has muscle. If you don't have enough of it, it's not a good look.
Your mother is right. Muscle burns fat. Light strength training is good for you.0 -

Lol, what? 24 hours in a day. 6 extra cals an hour, 24 hours in a day... 144 extra calories according to riley's post, though he dismisses the 120 extra a day, and that confused me.0 -
Increase the resistence on the elliptical it will help with toning which women so badly need! My advice either take a resistence or strength training class at your gym or do PT because correct form with training is EVERYTHING!!!!!! Don't let no one tell you different. Correct form is vital to not getting hurt. You can use weights, bands, medicine ball or your own body weight. YOu won't regret it.0

LOL, my bad, Riley wrote 6 calories per lb. body weight, so I assumed it was an extra 6 calories burned per lb. body weight per day.0 -

Ditto! Great story! I love how she looks basically the same exact size at a weak 117 lbs and a strong 140 lbs! Muscle is dense! Throw away the scale and concentrate on how the jeans fit and how many pushups (or squats or pullups or whatever) you can do and how good you feel!0 -

Who knows what I was thinking when I posted.0 -
ALL I DO IS LIFT (well, circuit weight training; I get my strength and cardio rolled up into one efficient time-slot.) I sit around 19% body fat. Got down to that from 26% in roughly 2 months just kicking butt & taking names on the testosterone-side of the gym for 40-75min 3-4x/wk.
Do I look like a "DUDE" to you?

Purrrrr right back at 'cha, but I'll take that as confirmation I don't look like I need a chomosome-check
The BEST part is... I get to eat 2100 NET calories a day and I have a hard time eating that much. Maybe I really should take up eating cardio-queens for breakfast...0
