How does My Fitness Pal figure out the trans fats in my foods?

MFP doesn't 'figure out' anything. Most food entries are user entered, so if there are trans fats listed in the database entry it's probably because it's stated on the food label.
With this caveat: there are many incorrect and incomplete database entries. So it's best to check the food label to make sure the entry you're using is correct.3 -
Does MFP show trans fat at all? I have only one column for fat, and it doesn't say what type, does it have different columns for different types if you are premium? I don't know.
Another thing to be aware of - depending on what country you are in, or your food is from, it may say there is no trans fat, but might actually contain some. For example, in the US it is legal to state zero trans but actually contain up to 0.5g of trans fat per serving.0 -
Hopefully, your foods don't have transfarts.0

Trans fats (and other types of fats) are visible for non premium members as well, you just need to look around where to find it.1 -

My "Trans fat" report suddenly started listing my consuming [or maybe what it lists is foods containing] trans fats almost every day in for the first time in two years. Trans fats used to pop up in a report once in a while, but I didn't worry about it as I don't think I consume too many, and I don't eat fast food. But I started gaining weight mysteriously about a month ago (I've been slowly but steadily losing weight on a low cal diet, nothing too crazy, just smaller portions and I still eat some sweets and processed foods, just not very many). This reporting of trans fats coincides with the weight gain, but I'm not eating anything new really, so just wondering what happened. And how to reverse it? If I could figure out where MFP gets that number from, I'd maybe be able to fix this.0

If you open individual entries of food, you can check the nutritional data and see whether there is something entered under trans fats.
But it's not likely to be the reason for weight gain, trans fats have just as many calories as other fats.2
