Hi, I'm a returning member. I've been struggling with my weight since 2017. I seem to go between Slimming World and calorie counting a lot, lose a bit of weight, then old habits and excuses start sneaking back in and I find myself heavier than when I started. Any advice for stopping this cycle? I really want this

I'm about 4.5 months into my latest attempt at losing and I have decided that this is it. My mantra has become "no temporary changes." I'm not doing anything that I can't sustain indefinitely. I've let go of the "dieting" mindset - it's not "weight loss," like it's just something you do until your body is an acceptable size and then stop. No, it's "weight management," an ongoing project that I'll need to keep up with for the rest of my life.

I would love to be a person who can eat intuitively, but I have 10 years of data that show that when I count calories I lose weight, and when I don't, I gain. So, I'll need to keep counting forever. Maybe someday my brain and gut will be retrained sufficiently that I can just eat what I want and maintain my weight without having to weigh and measure and track everything, but I can't count on that, so I'm not planning on it. I can't think about what I'm doing now in terms of "when i'm done," because when I reach GW I'll just need to shift gears into maintenance.

    Yep. What @goal06082021 says.

It has to be sustainable. I’ve not approached this as a “diet”, but as an absolute change of habits, lifestyle, retraining of tastebuds and expectations.

I’ve also committed to weighing and logging forever. I have not come this far to start over again.

Yup! The ]o-yo sucks. I hate losing the same 20 lbs over and over again. That's why I decided to come back on.

Glad I'm not alone, it's hard being stuck in this cycle. I think the most I've lost at one time was 1 stone, but each time I pile more weight on so I was at the heaviest I've ever been at the start of this time. I need this one to stick though, I want to have the health and energy to keep up with my hyperactive 4 year old

thank you for stepping off the "dieting" elevator. all that does is make your weight bounce higher and higher because you aren't changing your eating habits in the end. i've been on my weight control journey for 2 years and 3 days and one of the first things i learned was that diet is one of those 4 letter words we shouldn't say. some helpful things for you are
    1) keep a food and exercise record. don't worry about how much of everything you eat/drink at first. just log, log, log. be truthful. a lie in the record only hurts you and tells you that you really don't want to lose. as you go on you will start seeing trends pop up about certain foods/habits. address them as encountered.
    2) don't change everything at once. it will only lead to a slip and then frustration and quitting. change one bad habit and keep doing it until it's natural, hopefully about a week or two. then choose another one and work them both.
best of luck in your journey and please feel free to ask for any help or cheering.
