so I was sick last week, sore throat and fever.
Started feeling better, Saturday no sore throat felt great, so I did Zumba Sunday morning and started feeling sick again. Now I had a fever again last night and sore throat this morning ugh! I feel fine mow, just sore/raw throat.

How many of you workout still if you had a sore throat??

I'm sick right now. Sore throat, stuffed up, all that jazz. I want to workout but I know I won't be able to put my all into it. Also, my body needs the rest,. So I'm taking a few days off. I am going to go for a walk later on just to get out of the house but just a stroll. Feel better soon!
  • Thanks you too! I had just taken so much time off last week I hate it :(

I always workout when sick unless I am running a high fever. I think it helps me get over it faster.

Working out lowers your immune system temporarily. Don't work out while you're sick, you'll take longer to get better.

If I feel sick at all I don't work out. I'm a stay at home mom so I don't have the ability to get much rest when I'm sick. I don't get to sleep in, no one takes care of me. So if I don't feel well I hold off on exercise because I know my body doesn't need any extra stress when its fighting an illness.

I spent two weeks miserably sick last winter because my husband was sick at the same time and I never want to be in that position again!

I listen to my body. If I feel too sick, I lay-off a bit. Sometimes I just go lighter on my workouts, and sometimes I skip it all-together. A general rule of thumb: neck & up, it's OK to workout while below the neck, don't workout. BUT, the most important thing is to listen to your body and do what makes YOU comfortable, not what others tell you to do.

It is ok to exercise at a moderate intensity if you are sick above the throat, such as sneezing, runny nose, and minor sore throat... but if you have a sever sore throat, fever, chest congestion, hacking cough, or upset stomach do not work out! But key word, Moderate intensity, don't go all out...

Do not work out when you are sick. You need to relax your body and take care of yourself. Eat well, drink clear fluids, and enjoy your time off from working out.

I don't work out when I am sick. I wait until I am well. Let my body rest and get well.
  • I physically can't work out when sick. It runs me ragged and makes my sickness last longer.

I also find I can't workout at that time of the month. Get massive migraines. But I did find out I was slightly anemic last cycle as I have a platelet bleeding problem...so I get drained.

I say it is best to get over any illness first. Just make sure you heat healthily.

Let your body recover first. You won't be able to put your all into your workout when your sick. BUT KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

I had Strep Throat a few weeks ago and did not work out for a whole week. I did go to the dr and get meds for it. But if I am really sick then I do not work out. Your body is already in enough stress trying to fight off the sickness.
  • I have read and had my Dr confirm that exercise while sick has been proven to help you get over it more quickly. That said if it was intestinal for me I would pass on exercise, anything else and I "just do it"

The general rule is you're ok to keep going if the symptoms are above the neck (common cold type stuff) but if it's below the neck (chest congestion, upset stomach), you should rest. Also, don't exercise if you've got a fever, fatigue or feel achy (like flu).

I have to agree with this... If you're running a fever, your body is already putting out a lot of effort just fighting off whatever you've caught (strep maybe?). If you absolutely can't rest, just do something very low effort like a short walk. If you start to feel fatigued or short of breath, stop immediately.

On a side note - try gargling with salty water, it can help clear up those sore throat symptoms really quickly.

If you feel like you miss working out & want to do something .... find a nice stretching/stress reducing yoga video.

Your weight-loss comes from your reduced calorie diet, hopefully. so, when you're sick, take a break from exercise.
  • I have got all that too. I cant bare to exercise with a sore throat because all I want to do is drink. I think it best to exercise when your on top form and better.

Rest is needed when ill, you will recover quicker xxx

I'll only work out when sick if I'm feeling OK (as opposed to like a train just hit me) and the symptoms are above the neck (stuffy nose, head congestion). I would highly recommend NOT working out if you have a fever...that means your body is exerting itself trying to fight something off, so you don't want to weaken it any more. Drink lots of fluids and rest as much as you can until you start feeling stronger, then try a less intense workout and see how you feel.

The other thing is that if you go to a gym you should stay home if you're sick so you don't spread your germs around to other people!
  • Yes, when using public facilities .. Do not! Period.

Don't risk spreading illness to anyone else. Please stay home even if you have the sniffles. THAT is when you are the most contagious.
