I lived in Denmark for 3.5 years as a kid and I LOVED IT. Want to move overseas permanently in the future. I get along with Australians and Europeans much better than most Americans.

A missionary on an island where the inhabitants practice cannibalism sounds enthralling.

Why would you want to leave Indiana? It's awesome!

Wait...you mean that it's a prerequisite to know another language when living overseas? I thought the world bowed down to the almighty American language already?

I lived in Torrejon, outside Madrid, when I was a child. My father was stationed there in the air force. And because I lived there, I can no longer donate blood. I might have mad cow. *gasp*

It took quite a lot of work to find out WHY people who've lived on a military base in Europe for six consecutive months since 1980 can't give blood. It's because those bases contracted their beef imports from the UK.

And according to the Red Cross, the technology will likely never exist (or they won't pay for it) to screen the blood properly to allow me to ever donate again.

Yeah, but she won't unless he's stationed in Okinawa and she goes with him. And since he'll probably go to Afghanistan the potential for death or maiming and almost certain PTSD if he lives is SO worth it!

I've lived overseas for the past 9 years, since I was 15, and to be honest I have no plans of ever returning to the US. I'm actually considering relinquishing my citizenship in the future.

I am German and have lived overseas (from your perspective) nearly all my life. ;) But seriously, I did move overseas (from my perspective) once, for a year, I lived in the US. It was awesome. I also lived in Spain for a year which is not overseas (from my perspective) but a foreign country anyway. I'd do it again (move abroad) in a heartbeat. It's an awesome experience that makes you grow so much as a person, not to mention expand your cultural horizon.
You would probably feel 100% more comfortable moving to a country where you speak the language. Romania, China, Australia? That is a bit random. Hope you put some thought into the decision. Not sure what you do, but you would probably want to go to a country where you also have a chance of getting a job.

I'm a US-American who's been living overseas for about 3 years. I love it. I can't think of any reasons *not* to live abroad.. well, except that one mad cow thing someone posted. boo hoo. There's lot of reasons people can't donate anymore (I'm a cancer survivor- can't donate anymore. Their loss.) If he has the chance he should take it, and you too!

lol overseas? what does that mean exactly? Do you mean have you ever moved to live in another country to the one that you originally come from? Or do you mean have you ever lived on a boat?

I live on a tiny offshore island, I have never lived in another country other than England, I have travelled abroad widely, but there are very VERY few places that I would want to actually live.

My Husband is Canadian, so he has moved abroad and is living the English village life here on the island, he likes it here, it's VERY different to living in Toronto, and VERY VERY different to living in Canada, we do almost speak the same language however, at least enough to make ourselves understood lol

I'm not sure how much you've traveled abroad, but having spent some time in both Romania and China I can say that living there would be drastically different than, say, living in Australia or any other European/Western country. This is especially true if you don't have a job there. I'm actually in China right now and I can tell you it's an entirely different world and I can fully understand why people might struggle to live here. Also, in certain countries you will need to come to grips with being treated differently for being a woman, that can be quite difficult to accept initially. Just some food for thought.

well, if he looks at going back into the military then he will go in the AF as an officer...I was just curious what other people thought about living in other countries other than the one they live in now...I know it will be a change but that's why we are looking at doing it...something different and to say that we've lived somewhere culturally different

Or he can join the Navy, where can you find pleasure, search the world for treasure, learn science technology...

A fellow Hoosier! I was born and raised in Indiana and currently live near Lafayette.

    I've lived in:

    Oman
    Turkey
    Egypt
    Kuwait
    Syria
    Chad
    Yemen
    Thailand
    Indonesia
    Brunei

I've visited about 40 more, and truly loved my experiences. Whether you can do this type of lifestyle depends on you, can you adapt and realize you aren't in Kansas anymore (or Indiana), enjoy the differences or be frustrated by them?

I could live in China, depends on the area, I like Shanghai and the surrounding cities, Beijing is OK, Shenzhen would probably be OK as well. More rural I would really have to think about it (would depend on my work schedule), I'd have to take a pass on living in Chad again! (one civil war rescue is enough)
