Weight loss plateau

Hi everyone
Im really stuck ln what to do next. I am four months into my weight loss and have lost almost 50lb. The last 2 weeks i have been working out 3/4 times a week doing HIIT battle ropes, skipping and recently got some dumbbells to do full body workouts. I started doing these as my weight loss was clearly slowing down which im assuming is due to my metabolism slowing down.
Since ive been working out and sticking to my 1800-2000 calories a day i lost 0.5lb one week and then put on 1.5lb this week and im so confused. Im still on a good amount of calories and exercising 3/4 times per week and im putting on weight!!! Im really stuck on what to do, i also upped my protein intake to help with some muscle and help my metabolism but im struggling so much.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Slow loss no loss and or gain after starting a new or increased exercise program is likely the most common complaint on this board.
The short answer is newly stressed muscles retain water. Stay the course and give it more time.
That said, have you adjusted your calories to reflect your current weight? If not you may want to give that a look. And be careful. A high level of fitness combined with weight loss works within tight margins. And the closer you get to goal the tighter the margins get.
50 lbs in 4 months is very fast. Anything like that going forward will probably cost you muscle mass that you probably don’t want to give up. Congratulations on the loss. That’s some great work. If you haven’t looked at the Fitness board you might want to. Those folks can probably help you keep fueling your workouts while losing. Good luck.0 -
I appreciate the help, the water retention point gives me some relief that im not doing anything majorly wrong. When you say adjust my calories for my current weight im assuming you mean drop them even more? Surely at that point im going dangerously low and slowing down my metabolism even more?0

Just my opinion, but trying to fine tune metabolism probably isn’t a thing to look at. We don’t have laboratories to hook ourselves up. Your metabolic rate is what it is.
But fueling your workout is definitely a concern. A major concern. And as I was trying to suggest, it’s a fine line to walk. It’s why people who train with weights take up macro counting.
Truth is the process is slower than most people would like. There’s a significant calorie counting learning curve. Everyone is different. It takes quite a bit of time consuming trial and error to find what works for us personally.0
