Water intake vs retention

This week I decided to get serious about my water intake. I bought a Nalgene water bottle so I could see what I drank. This started Monday (4 days). I usually weigh in weekly on Tuesday. This week down one pound even though I ate whatever on Father's Day. I stepped on the scale today and down another pound. I'm wondering if the emphasis on water intake is flushing water weight out? Thoughts?

There are so many variables it would be hard to determine that two cause. The good be shifts in sodium, increased waste production or fathers day just gave your body a needed refeed if you have been dieting for awhile.4

Very interesting indeed. I upped my water yesterday and I stepped on the scale this morning and I dropped. I try to get all my required water in daily but feel like I'm falling short a day here and there.1

If you are somewhat dehydrated, as many of us are, your body is more likely to hold onto water when it gets it. If your body knows there is enough, it doesn't hold onto it as much.3

My dietician told me to do exactly this same thing. I was having daily swings of 1-2 pounds total weight. She offered the opinion that I wasn't loosing 2 pounds of fat a day, then gaining it all back the next day while on a calorie restriction, the fluctuations were water retention. So she upped my daily water intake goal, and the fluctuations are settling out.
Now what the mechanism of that is, I don't even. But it is working for me.2 -
Yeah, I was pretty certain it wasn't actual weight loss but I'd never heard of water intake affecting anything. Thanks1
