How does one gain so much weight in such a short amount of time? I'll tell you. I drink too much alcohol and eat junk food like it's going out of style. I can't keep doing this cycle of gain weight lose weight anymore. I've gained 30 pounds in the last year and half and it just keeps getting worse. Lots of struggles in life that led me to this point. I finally got to the point of deep despair and realized what I've done to myself. I'm going back to what worked for me to lose weight. I thought I could do it without MFP, but I can't. Being on MFP, helps keep me accountable and so glad there are so many great people who have similar stories.

It's with anything though. You stop lifting weights, your muscle atrophy. You stop doing weekly bowling, you'll suck when you go back till you practice again.
CONSISTENCY is what makes most people successful in any endeavor. And people that stay leaner all the time are just consistent with what keeps them there.

You look amazing, and weight gain/loss fluctuates all of the time. Cut yourself some slack1

So I gather you lose weight... gain weight... lose weight... gain weight etc.
You keep coming back to MFP because it works.
BUT IT ISN'T.
It isn't, not because MFP can't work. It isn't not because MFP isn't doing what it is supposed to. And it isn't because MFP CAN'T work.
It isn't working because you are not using your time period of weight loss to set-up your initial and long term maintenance. And you're far from the only person who does that
Think back to the last few times you started gaining weight again... what made you START on that road?
Why didn't you STOP within a few lbs.
What were the barriers to resuming what you knew would work to control your weight?
How can you lower these barriers?
How can you make it EASY to do the "right" weight control things and say: I'm doing this "starting right now" instead of saying "I'll start tomorrow"?
Experiment while losing weight. Start experimenting with things you can keep doing long term.
Moderate your RATE of loss as you move forward and use the time to embed habits and interests that will continue during maintenance. Don't make life hard... try to make it so that food and exercise (and even drinks if possible) will continue the same way when you maintain... sure, there will be differences and things will change over time, but try to setup future weight management consistency.6 -
I lost 20kg after years of yoyo dieting. Then the last 3 years have yoyoed again. I kept off the initial 20 (yay) but keep losing and gaining the same 5kg. It's annoying.
I realise I've fallen into a binge/lose weight cycle. I can stick to MFP and lose weight for about 3 months, then I fall into a binge cycle where I binge and gain all the weight back in a month or so. Freak out and lose over 3 months. Rince and repeat.
I've finally decided to tackle the binging aspect. And have decided to incorporate diet breaks. So I'm going to track fie 12 weeks, then take a maintenance break of a week. Track, and break. I've also started listening to brain over binge podcast to help with the binges. I'm a huge skeptic of that sort of self help, I have found a lot of useful tips and ideas. Day 4 of my new plan (yeah early days) and feeling better. Hoping things help.
For the record I don't have a huge deficit - only 500 calories. Slow and steady wins the race5 -
The picture of me was from 6 or 7 years ago. I do not look like that now, but my goal is to get back to that weight. Thanks for your insights ladies.4

Thirty pounds gain in a year and a half implies that, on average, you've consistently been eating barely over 200 calories daily above your weight-maintenance calories. That's the equivalent of roughly one daily serving of peanut butter, 8oz of wine, or one moderate serving of standard pasta (with nothing on it).
I'm hearing clearly that you're struggling psychologically, and empathize very much . . . but I wrote the above to encourage you to keep the weight gain in perspective. If you drop under maintenance calories by the same amount you've been over, you'll lose 30 pounds in 18 months, too, roughly. This is something you can do.
If you want to lose faster, you may be able to do that within reasonable levels of health risk (you don't say what your current weight is).
However, if things are difficult for you now, I'd encourage you to think not just about what was successful for weight loss in the past (but that seemingly wasn't sustainable to maintain), but also to think about losing weight with a non-punitively-difficult method, and finding a sustainable set of reasonably-happy habits along the way that will help you stay at a healthy weight longer-term, without needing bundles of willpower or determination.
Wishing you success!8
