So I am thinking of taking a B12 and D3 supplement.

    Perhaps explain why?

e.g. I've personally no reason to suspect my B12 levels are low and blood test results show my Vit D levels are fine from Spring to Autumn so I supplement in the dark months of Winter only.

A simple approach is to take a good-quality multivitimin. Generally, these don't overdose you with anything.

In the summer, I also take a magnesium, calcium, zinc tab, as recommended by my GP to counteract loss due to sweating. (Don't over-do it as the magnesium is a laxative!)

B12 is not something people are typically deficient in unless they have absorption issues or are vegan. You can overdo it on D3...I generally don't recommend supplementation of D3 unless your bloodwork shows deficiency and your Dr. should be able to tell you the right amount to take to get your levels up without doing harm to yourself.

As a general rule, my view is that most supplements are largely marketing programs to make people manufacture very expensive pee, so unless I've been diagnosed with a health-threatening deficit, I avoid them.

D3 can be dangerous in high doses, but multivitamin doses shouldn't do much harm.

B12: even if your intake is low or sporadic, the liver can store and deliver B12 when needed for as much as 3-5 years, so TRUE deficiencies are usually limited to strict vegans who consume no animal products, and older adults who commonly have problems such as diverticulitis or other GI problems that restrict proper absorption. If you consume more than you can use or the liver can store, you've just paid for very expensive pee or poop.

It’s great that you are aware of what vitamins you are lacking in but DNA based vitamins are more beneficial because you are genetically unique and so are the nutritional needs. So, rather than going for over-the-counter generic vitamins, I would suggest you go for DNA based supplements like Ginihealth.

Nope...DNA based anything at this stage of the game is a total crap-shoot. Yes, DNA testing can show what you MIGHT have a tendency towards, but it does not predict anything with certainty. As a prime example of this, there are hundred of thousands of women walking around with the gBRCAm gene right now - and relatively very few of them will ever develop breast cancer*. That a person has the gene indicates that they are more likely to develop the cancer (and should be very diligent in taking the usual precautions), but it does not mean that they WILL develop breast cancer.

The best thing to do would be to get a blood test with the relevant checks and then proceed from those results.

*No, I am not making light of breast cancer - I have multiple survivors in my family/extended family... I am just making a point about genetic testing.
