Seeking Advise on Exercise - On Medical Rest, Limited movement

Ok, so I have an odd medical condition that caused one of my kidneys to be large and non-functioning that was discover last summer. I was aware of the risks and unfortunately, I fell during one of my practices off the horse and ruptured said kidney. I'm on rest for who knows how longer and not allowed to lift or do things that will agitate my abdominal area. But I still want to keep in shape until my surgery and after. I have been doing planks and minor things to try to keep my abdominal fit. I am also still working on flexibility, though only my legs as doing a back bridge would probably not be a while thing to try until after recover is complete and docs clean me to do normal life stuff again.

What exercises might you guys suggest for ab workouts?

    Unfortunately, because of your medical condition, it would be foolish of me to give you any guidance.

    Talk with your medical provider and get a referral to a PT who can guide you with appropriate workouts.

    Sorry you are not getting any advice but I would imagine most are hesitant just like me.

    True...I forgot how others might feel about giving advice for someone with an on going medical condition. I will keep that in mind while on the board. Thank you for the advice, I didn't think it would be an issue but what you said definitely makes sense.

    Only with your doctor’s OK! I would suggest a recumbent exercise bike or elliptical. And NOT pushing it to the limit.

    Thanks! Seeing my specialist this week so will be able to ask. Been wanting to sign up at the local gym to do cardio and flexibility. Hoping Doc will let me go back to working on arm strength soon again since my muscles are starting to lack with being on rest for a month now at docs request.

    I agree with the above, especially as medics have told you not to agitate your ab area. But two things that you might do safely are to squeeze the glute muscles when you are standing up and to very very gently pull in your stomach muscles, as if trying to get your navel to touch your spine. Doing this whenever you remember, sitting, standing or lying down, will keep the muscles active, without straining them. And it's one of the best ab exercises out there. I used to ignore all ab workouts when I was a super fit gym bunny in my twenties, because they often put strain on the neck or the back, but just did this instead and had a very flat, strong core.

    But even that one - check with the doctor first.

    As above, always check with your doctor/PT specialist before doing ANY exercise while injured.

    If possible, look into Caroline Jordan on Youtube? She's a fitness instructor with a lot of content for people coming back from injuries, and she offers a lot of modification for all her exercises. I did a lot of her chair workouts while healing from a knee injury for 2 months. Good luck, stay healthy!
