I'm curious has anyone ever made the cabbage soup from the cabbage soup diet? I don't want to do the cabbage soup diet itself, I just want to make the soup because I like all the things that are in it. But I was curious to if it actually tastes good?

  • What is in it? Is it like the corn beef and cabbage crockpot thing?
  • Here is the website where I found the recipe:

    http://www.cabbage-soup-diet.com/

    The recipe is:

    6 large green onions
    2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
    3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
    1 bunch of celery
    half a head of cabbage
    1 package Lipton soup mix
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
    1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)
Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.
    Directions:

Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.

Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.

Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.

Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.

Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.

If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

I had a friend who's father lost some weight on this diet, which I don't think is a very good one, but I was curious about the soup itself. I'm sure its not very high in calories and might be filling!

This may not be what you are looking for, but when I was on Weight Watchers a few years ago, they had a great cabbage soup recipe. I LOVED this soup, and best of all (With W.W.) it is 0 points!!! I would have some ready in the fridge when I got home for work, pop it in the microwave and have that, then start my meal. It stopped me from snacking. I will pass along the recipe.

    2/3 C. Sliced Carrot
    1/2 C. Diced Onion
    2 Garlic Cloves, Minced
    3 C. Fat Free Broth (Beef/Chicken/Vegetable)
    1 1/2 C Diced Green Cabbage
    1/2 C Green Beans
    1 Tbsp. Tomato Paste
    1/2 tsp. Dried Basil
    1/4 tsp. Dried Oregano
    1/4 tsp. Salt
    1/2 Cup Diced Zucchini

Spray a large saucepan with nonstick cooking spray, heat. Saute the first 3 ingredients, on low heat until softened, approx. 5 min. Add the rest of the ingredients except the zucchini. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, then simmer, covered, about 15 minutes or until beans are tender. Stir in the zucchini and heat for 3-4 minutes. Serve hot.

    Cabbage Soup Diet Information
(and How To Lose Up To 10 lbs In A Single Week)

If you have a special occasion coming up, or you simply need to lose weight fast, the Cabbage Soup Diet may be just what you're looking for.
Although not suitable for long-term weight loss, the Cabbage Soup Diet is a low-fat, high-fiber diet that will help you get into shape fast before you embark on a more moderate long-term eating plan.

Pros and Cons of the Cabbage Soup Diet

Pros: You'll lose weight fast, and can get as much of the foods listed in the program as you want. Although the diet is only for seven days (and shouldn't be adhered to for longer), it provides a great "kick-start" for a more moderate diet.

Cons: Some people find the soup bland. Some people have reported feeling light-headed, weak, and have suffered from decreased concentration (although some who have been affected in this way felt it was well worth it, since it was only for a week and they had lost considerable weight).

What the Cabbage Soup Diet is NOT

The cabbage soup diet is sometimes referred to as the "Mayo Clinic Diet", and the "Sacred Heart Hospital Diet". Interestingly, this diet has nothing to do with either the Mayo Clinic, nor any Sacred Heart Hospital we know about.

The Problem With Most "Mainstream" Diets

Most diets - especially "mainstream" diets, and those recommended by major medical institutions - work slowly but surely, resulting in around 1 pound of weight loss per week.

This "slow and steady" way to lose weight is certainly healthy, but suffers from one significant drawback : most people get discouraged and quit whatever diet they are on if they don't see results quickly.

    Seven Keys to Success

    Follow the diet religiously.
Drink at least 4 glasses of water per day
Keep in mind that it's only seven days
Complement the diet with a good multivitamin tablet
Print the information on this site so you can refer to it daily
Eat plenty of soup - as much as you want! Do not try to starve yourself or you'll probably cheat and break the diet
Try different spices to liven up the soup and add variety

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Remember: This diet should only be followed for 7 days at a time, with at least two weeks in between.

    Day One:
Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.

    Day Two:
Vegetables: Eat until you are stuffed will all fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat leafy green vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit today.

    Day Three:
Mix Days One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato.

    Day Four:
Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.

    Day Five:
Beef And Tomatos: Ten to twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomtoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once this day. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef (but absolutely no skin-on chicken). If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef one one of the beef days (but not both).

    Day Six:
Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart's content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables. No Baked Potato. Eat your soup at least once.

    Day Seven:
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.

Tried it 10 years ago. It does NOT work and is really unhealthy.
  • i don't do the cabbage soup diet, but I do make this soup from time to time...especially in the winter, and if I'm feeling run down..I will sometimes add some lean beef stew meat...but its really all the veggies that make me happy....

(One thing...I don't use the lipton soup mix anymore...so much salt....I really just build my own base with onions, garlic, beef stock, some worchestershire sauce....but the lipton soup mix is yummy.)
  • Thank you everyone for your responses! I don't want to do the diet, I just want a soup like it. Something like Tanya mentioned that is filling. I usually don't eat a lot, but when Aunt Flo rears her ugly head I get where I feel like I'm starving all the time! I thought maybe when I get like that I could use the soup as a filler.

Does anyone else have any filling foods? I do eat oatmeal of the mornings it seems to keep me from overeating for the rest of the day. I'm just looking for some low cal filling things to make thats why I was curious about the soup.

Thanks for all the replies and recipes!!! :flowerforyou:

i make this one a couple times a week
i omit the green beans and add more cabbage
i also add about a 1/4 cup of canned tomatoes instead of the paste
it has zero points on their plan
