Fluctuating weight

Is it normal when starting out with a lot of weight to loose that you can loose 5kg and then suddenly within days pick up 2kgs?

Fluctuations are normal, yes.
Losing 5kg seems to be a quite large loss, but can be normal when reducing food/carb/sodium intake.
An increase can be caused by exercise, salt intake, increased food intake,...or simply your body 'recalibrating' your water weight level after that big drop of 5kg.

The trick is to look at the long term trend and ignore short term fluctuations.3 -

Regardless of how much weight you have to lose, fluctuations are normal and natural. Bodyweight isn't static and fluctuates whether you're losing or maintaining weight. Your body is comprised of roughly 55-65% water and that composition is always variable dependent upon a myriad of things. You also will always have varying amounts of inherent waste in your system as foods digest and whatnot.
This is what actual weight loss looks like plotted on a graph over time...note that the actual weight spikes and dips frequently...the red line is the overall trend and the important thing...
