That's lovely you are doing this for charity! :flowerforyou:

Fasting isn't just religious or charity thing, it's also good for your body as it flushes toxins out. The Muslim fasting that doesn't allow for water during the day is pretty tough, although in general I find a lot of positive things in their religion and one of them is exactly fasting. The other being that they always wash their posteriors after restroom and Muslim men are circumsized and shaven at all the strategic places of the body. (well, just my personal preference here :blushing:)

Water can be toxic itself, so no food and no water makes sense to me if you are really thoroughly cleaning your body, although personally I will probably never dare to fast without water as it can cause more pain than gain on a warmer day. I have tried water fasting for 1 day like what you are doing now and some years ago I tried light fasting for several days with tea and some fruit (there was a popular book that recommended it at the time), it's not very hard during the day but usually quite hard in the evening. It usually recommends for lighter food before you start so you prepare your body and definitely lighter food after you finish. Light food meaning fruit and vegetables mostly.

On a different note, I read one article about peritonitis (years ago my best friend died from it a little before her 16th birthday ), so among everything else it said it can occur if you eat something too oily after not eating for an extensive period of time. This should mean a lot longer than a single day but just thought I should mention since I personally felt somewhat upset from it...

This topic has been covered very thoroughly. Here's a good post that goes over it. it's old, but it's still relevant.
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/2934-fasting

Please be careful what you tell people.
I'm all for fasting if it's done for the right reasons (religious, surgery, done under doctor's supervision, and in this case, for a good cause and only for 1 day)
But fasting for health and "flushing toxins" is both unproven, and dangerous.

ugh, i probably didn't explain myself very well - i definitely do not recommend fasting/starvation at all, nor have i ever done it for longer than a day. what i did long time ago was probably a week on tea and fruit but i don't remember any particular results from it except i was so hungry

i do believe that fasting can be used for health reasons but i also believe that this shouldn't be done on your own for longer periods of time without some kinda specialist following your condition because i've also read about people killing themselves trying to achieve health this way. :ohwell: the Muslim fasting is only during the bright part of the day, they can eat/drink when it's dark outside, so I find it positive but I am not Muslim so I neither need nor want to fast without any water all day...

so, all in all, i second your idea that fasting is good but just a single day on water :flowerforyou:

oh i followed that link... the OP is recommending fasting as a quick way of losing weight... yeah, pretty much, except it will come right back once your done and that's if you make it to the end of your fasting days because you might just end up in hospital long before that. definitely not what i meant... if i was into that i wouldn't be on MFP but busy meditating and saying prayers (never said a prayer in my life but might as well learn) all day like what she recommends there

ps: i just checked the profile of that girl who recommends fasting for losing weight... that was even more entertaining to read than the post itself

The Islamic fast really is not that bad. You're right in that we only fast during the daylight hours, and we have to refrain from both food and drink, as well as other things. What many people don't know is that a part of our fast is that we are supposed to take a pre-dawn mean called suhoor. It is not safe to fast without doing so. We're not supposed to pig out before or after our fast, but we are supposed to eat something and drink lots of water before the fast begins in order to fast safely. And then when we break our fast when it is time, we are supposed to only have some dates and some water, then we do our prayer, and then we eat a regular meal.

Funny thing is, a lot of times after fasting all day I could be hungry, but then when I break my fast I just want some water and after that I'm not even hungry anymore, and I end up having to force myself to eat a meal. Also, there were times when I first became Muslim and was trying to fast in Ramadan where I didn't know you were supposed to eat first, I didn't do that and I would end up spotting later in the day. But when I do it right and take suhoor first I have no problems like that.

PS congrats realta for your successful fast.
