30-Day Shred Question

I'm participating in a weight loss challenge where the only measure of success is how many pounds you lose - you have to lose 8% of your body weight (as a team) in 12 weeks. My personal 8% is only about 4 lbs away (wahoo!), but the team is struggling a little bit. If we don't lose the 8% team weight, we EACH lose $240. You can see where I'd be against that happening...

Anyway, I keep seeing before and after pics of people who've done the 30-Day Shred - and they're AMAZING. Personally, I don't care if I weigh 300 lbs if I wear a size 8 and can exercise without wanting to die, so I don't really care what the scale says - but I really kind of need that money back. The before/after stats usually have people losing a bunch of inches but NOT a lot of weight on the scale. Is that the standard? What about for someone who started more around my size/weight?

If I decide the scale probably won't move enough, I'll just do it after the weight loss challenge is over - so it's not a matter of do it or not, it's a matter of when I start. Thank you for the help!

ETA: And I've searched! Most of the posts don't address my specific question about larger people weight loss - even the thread on the success board is mostly people who weigh a lot less than I do!

I've not done it but I have noticed the same thing you have, more inches lost than weight.

If you want to win the challenge, I would wait until it's over before starting the Shred. I gained weight the first few weeks b/c I was out of shape and tore muscles like crazy (which retains water), and then gained some more from replacing fat w/muscle (which has a higher mass per unit volume). But I'm not sure for someone first starting their weight loss journey (i.e. with a good amt of weight to lose)....

I started 30DS at about 182 lbs and while I have a week left of it (I'm on day 22), I've only lost about 5 lbs. I think I saw only a couple results where someone started heavier somewhere over 200 lbs and lost about 12 lbs or so. You'd have to be be VERY meticulous in your diet (eating enough but only eating wholesome food, lots of protein and veggies, less carbs as that holds onto water weight, etc) and probably do an extra bout of cardio on top of the Shred workout each day to lose what you want to in order to win.

Truthfully, to lose the most amount of POUNDS in the shortest time, you are best sticking with a very low-gylcemic-carb diet for a short time. That will make you lose a lot of the extra water your body holds on to. Just be careful once you start eating carbs again.
  • Yes when you do work out and use muslces that aren't overly active, it will stress them and they will retain water to repair. This will cause water weight in the body and ultimately fat lost by weight will be balnaced by water weight retained. The old muscle weighs more than fat. I would get on a low cal diet, and start walking. You can lose a bunch just by doing this at your weight. I see that you are gluten free, here is a weight loss shake product that is both lactose and gluten free, info of it is at www.av-promos.com. It will help you replace meals with a low cal solution and the fiber/mineral balnace will help curb hunger. Good luck to you, I hope you can get that $240 back.
