Run vs walk calories

Newbie question here as I am just starting out. Does running 5k burn the same calories as walking 5k? Is time relevant here or distance?

    Running burns more than walking for the same distance. Speed does influence the calorie burn a little bit, but mostly it's distance that matters.

    You'll want to select net calories instead of gross calories if the goal is to enter the calories in MFP.

    Running and walking have very different efficiency, with walking your skeleton is primarily supporting your weight as one foot is always on the ground. With running you are projecting yourself upwards with muscular effort to get both feet off the ground and to a large extent that energy to lift yourself vertically is wasted.

    Unless that is you have kangaroo tendons that store and rebound that energy. :)

    If you are looking for bigger burns then run, don't walk and go for bigger distances.

    It's more the intensity of the exercise that matters for overall calorie burn. So, running a 5K vs. walking a 5K is different and you will burn more if you're running/jogging vs. walking.

    Interesting. I run really really slow- about 12.5 minutes per mile. Yeah. I know. 🤦🏻‍♀️ However, slowing down has stopped the bruising and bloody falls and trips I was having.

    I’m so slow I record them as walks even though I’m going through all the motions of running.

    Interestingly, at my slow speed, @Lietchi’s calculator has me at 325 calories for a walk and 321 as a run.

    So it appears that speed matters, lol.

    Slow running burns more calories than moderate speed running and fast walking burns more than moderate speed walking, so yeah, it can make a difference 🙂

    I put it in the calculator both ways. The only thing I changed was the mode (walking versus running). At my turtle pace, it was almost identical.

    I think I'm missing the point of your reply, sorry. I understood that you entered everything the same except walking /running. I meant to say that while running generally burns more than walking, the actual speed does make a difference and can skew the comparison a bit. Running is less efficient at lower speeds for example, waking les efficient at very high speeds.
