HIIT questions

What is this exactly? Should I be doing this in the cardio parts of my workouts? How does it work and is it better than just a normal 30 minutes on the elliptical?

Any info appreciated.....I know my body is ready to step up the cardio side of my workouts...mind is not :) but body is...
