Howdy From Texas!

Hi there! My name is Emily and I’d like to introduce myself and why I chose this app. On August 25th, I had a life changing medical emergency that made me almost loose my life. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke or any drugs and my medical emergency was a TIA (mini stroke). After numerous doctors and appointments, I was given the news that unless I watch my glycemic index and loose 10-15% of my body weight I can possibly have a full stroke in the next 3-5 years. So hopefully this journey continues to keep me on the track to continue to save my life. Feel free to add me as well as I love meeting new people as well.

It must have been a shock, but it's also a good wake up call. I was/am in a similar situation and it is amazing how much proper diet (as in, good food, not starving) can do that we think only medication can do.

I only joined here recently (10 years after the first attempt), and I found the support strong and positive.

If I can do it everyone can do it ;)

@Ladybugloveremily — I used my understanding of how devastating a Covid infection likely would be for me to keep going with weight loss. I’ve now been below goal for months.

I believe focusing on the negative rarely results in long lasting positive health behaviors. Thus, I think the key for me was to frame my fear of a bad Covid outcome as a positive—I CAN lose weight, which will lower my A1c, BP, and cholesterol. It’s in my power to reduce my risk. My A1c is now under 5.

Making good dietary choices is important as well for me rather than just cutting calories. I currently eat 125 grams or so of carbs, with oats, beans, and lentils prominent. I eat very little saturated fat and sodium. Living alone helps as I don’t have to have simple carbs, butter fats, or salty snacks for anyone else in the house. Now that I’m where I am with my weight, I have air popped popcorn with some salt twice a week. I add cocoa powder to my spiced oatmeal every morning (old fashioned oats with my own spice mix) and REALLY look forward to it every morning.
