Morning all,

Advice needed. When recording exercise should I list everything for the day? I walk to work (average 2 hours), but I don't record it as I don't class it as a conscious decision to exercise.

Thanks :)

You shouldn't record everything: even if you chose sedentary as your activity level, some steps/daily activity is included in that (around 3000 steps).
Walking can be included in your activity level or it can be added as exercise (anything above around 3000 steps, if you chose sedentary as our activity level), it's just a matter of choice.

I do a lot of walking, too, walking to my local yoga studio and barbell gym, and apparently I walk around the house quite a bit.

I accommodate that walking in my choice of activity level.

When I go for an actual “walk” for exercise, though, I start and stop those sessions on my activity tracker so those walks are reported as exercise.

I’d think that ultimately, if you have a lower activity level and report the walks to work as exercise, versus setting a higher activity level and not counting them, the numbers should be fairly comparable.

You could experiment by changing goal settings to see.

But did you take that two hour walk to work into account when setting your activity level?
(So many people ignore that the activity setting isn't JUST your job - it's all your regular daily movement patterns.)

That walk is a significant time moving and calorie expenditure so should be accounted for either in your activty setting or as exercise but no, don't count everything.

Personally when I had a desk job I accounted for my walking to/from/at work by bumping my activity setting up. A sedentary job but overall I was at least Lightly Active taking all my usual movement into account.
