Hi MFP Friends....

Sunday night I awoke at 4:00 a.m. because I could feel my heart pounding - I was almost out of breath, sweaty, and counted my heart rate at 130 bpm!!! It stayed high for a few hours, and then dropped for most of the day to 100 bpm, which is still really high for me. My resting rate is around 60, and my daily sedentary rate (at the computer, moving around) is in the high 70's.

Anyone had this experience? Any suggestions? (I'm seeing my doctor in 2 hours)....

Thanks for any info!

I should say that the night before this event I'd had 3 magaritas and a glass of wine..... don't know if that changes things!
    :blushing:
    (and some stress at work)

The good news is you are taking the right step by seeing your doctor! :flowerforyou:

Next, are you taking any diet pills or any new medications? I know that some allergy medicines that are 24hours make my heart race and wake me up at all times of the night and I have had to quit taking those types of medicines. If you are taking any diet pills or energy supplements you may be having a reaction to some of the "energy" additives.

Make sure you let your doctor know of any medications or changes in medication, both over the counter and prescription (including any birth control).

Hopefully it is something this simple like this and not a serious health problem, good for you for calling your doctor sooner rather than later!

good luck, keep us posted :drinker:

Didn't see the margarita part until I was done posting, but you may be having panic attacks or sleep issues from the alcohol. Tell your dr. all so they can help complete the puzzle.

    Hi

    HOW WEIRD
The same thing happened to me this week......I didn't sweat or anything but just woke up to my hard pounding/racing...really odd as it never happened ot me before and hasn't happened since
I was due for my physical anyway, so I went in on Friday
Didn't even mention it as it hasn't happened again
My b/p and everything was fine and the Dr also took some blood....

Let us know how your appt goes

    Thanks ladies!!!

Kim - that is odd! How fast was your heart? My blood pressure is usually quite low, but I didn't take it. I ended up sitting next a nurse on the plane (this happened the night before a flight) and she said it could be thyroid problems. She ran down the list of hyorthyroid symptoms, and I had them all, but I thought those were pretty typical and normal!

I'll post the results - thanks again for the support ladies!

i don't know how old you are or your medical history but i know there is a cardiac condition called atrial fibrilation. it's fairly common i guess though i don't know what causes it.
i work in an E.R doing EKGs and iv'e seen this a lot in young people ( they are usually under stress). it comes and goes, is not painful, and can be reversed with medication.
so i would not worry:wink: but ask your doctor for an EKG and if it happens again you should go to an E.R so they can test you while its happening sometimes thats the only time we can see anything.
good luck, and try to be calm even though it's super scary i'm sure:grumble:

A few hours is a long time to have an elevated heart rate... Were you panicking about your elevated heart rate (and thereby keeping it elevated)? What were you thinking about?

this happened to me too after a night of 4 cocktails and some pizza.

I woke up with a racing heart and all I could think of was the alcohol and the salt in that pizza.

good luck, i am curious what they say

I had the opposite happen to me about a week after having mylast baby. I woke up in the middle of the night with a really tight chest and was worried about a blood clot so I went to the ER and I didnt have one but they kept me anyhow overnight because my heartrate was to low. I was in the 30's but they did an EKG and other heart tests and everything was fine so they sent me home. To this day I dont know waht happened and sometimes I get that same feeling.

Oops...that should have read HEART not hard...LOL
Anyway, I hope it isn't my thyroid...I had a nodule removed 3 yrs ago and all my b/w since then (yearly) has been fine
I was told my b/w would be back on MOnday....if I don't hear from them by the end of today...I'm going to call tomorrow just to be sure

    Keep us posted
    Kim
  • I'm a little too familiar with a racing heart. And you know what? The 2 times that it has happened to me was after a night of drinking. :ohwell:

I waited 2 days to go to the ER and that was scary. Alcohol and anxiety had something to do with it. I guess the anxiety came when I was worried about my heart rate being so fast. They did an EKG test on me and everything came out fine.

So I'm 100% sure the alcohol played a role in your racing heart. Hope all goes well!

I have had that happen too after a couple of glasses of wine. I am not sure why it happened though. It's a good thing you are going to see your dr, just to rule out anything underlying!!

    Let us know what happens!

Are you allergic to sulfites? Was it red wine? Hope all is well!

Hope all is well! Could also be a panic/anxiety attack. They come without warning and can really raise your heartbeat. I'm sure your doctor will be able to tell ya!

Tequila has done that to me several times. Margaritas are my favorite!!:smooched: However, I do have a history of panic attacks too so that may be it too. Let us know what the doc says!! Good luck to you!! I hate that feeling! its very scary!! Hope you are feeling better!!:flowerforyou:

Panic and anxiety attacks can cause the heart to speed up. I hope its nothing serious, keep us posted on what the doc says. Good Luck

It's been a few days, and I've been resting (not feeling great)... but BIG HUGS AND THANKS to all of you! You all made me feel soooo much better (especially those who've had a similar experience and all is well).

The doctor on Monday thought it was lots of caffeine in the morning, then the wine tasting tour in the afternoon, then cocktails, paired with my lack of sleep in the trip (I'm from Toronto and was in California) anxiety of flying, and whamo.....

I have a follow up tomorrow. Thanks again for all the support! No exercise for me yet (I'm scared) and my energy is really really dragging.

Thanks again for all the support! You're great people!

Ugh! So glad that it is "just" a horrible combo of alcohol, stress & jet lag! I hope that's all it was, AJCM! :flowerforyou:

I've hit 187 while swimming hard sprint sets sometimes, but as long as it drops down fairly quick, I'm not worried about it. I think 189 is my all time high, but I tend to stay in the 150-170 when exercising.

This has me thinking - I often push my heart up to 180 at some point during my workout (almost daily) and workout for most of the hour with a rate of 150-160.... I'm wondering if this is just too high...

When I first started running my heart rate always went up to 190, after a few weeks when I ran it still went up to between 160-170, I have been working out with my heart rate at this level, is this too much?

This happened to me 1) when I first realized I had hypertension and 2) when I get the recommended amount of potassium in my diet and supplement it with a potassium pill...glad to hear you are doing better though and that your doctor scheduled a follow up...

I think (or thought) as long as you are under 85% of your maximum (220-age) you are okay, however it might just be too much! I've been reading a lot lately about runners and cyclists who can't get their hearts down, and their hearts race for hours after they stop the exertion, at rate in the high one hundreds.

Prolonged high heart rate after exertion is a sign of a cardiovascular problem. Anyone experiencing this should inform their doctor and get tests to find out what is causing it.

And Laura, did your doctor prescribe the potassium supplement for you? Is he aware that you're taking it? I hope you're following medical advice and not taking it unsupervised.

For everyone who doesn't know this: Excess potassium can cause a heart attack. The "lethal injection" is potassium chloride!

    Be very careful with supplements!
